There’s some really incredible ground coffee at Aldi, you guys. And honestly, there better be, because when I went into this store on a mission to buy up all the coffee they had, I was not expecting to leave with four full shopping bags. Coffee is not scarce at Aldi, I’ll tell you that much. If you’re looking for the best Aldi coffee, there’s a lot to sort through; luckily, I did the caffeinated legwork for you. (Seriously. This is the most caffeinated I have ever been for a taste test. I am dead inside, and I did it for you.)

What kinds of coffee does Aldi offer?

Barissimo, Aldi’s house brand responsible for all of the coffee from this taste test, offers a wide range of Aldi K-Cups, ground coffee, and whole beans. You can buy the full spectrum of light to dark roasts and a handful of flavored coffees, too, like Hazelnut, Caramel, and French Vanilla. Barissimo seems to pretty exclusively use 100% Arabica blends, and many bags come Fair-Trade or Rainforest-Alliance certified. For the sake of my blood-caffeine level, I focused my taste test on K-Cups and ground coffee only—whole bean coffee is another beast we can tackle at a later date.

What we looked for in the best Aldi coffee

  • Depth: Good Aldi coffee should taste rich and balanced, not watery or flat, even at a low price point.
  • Distinct flavor notes: Whether chocolatey, nutty, or bright and fruity, I looked for blends that I could pick apart like wine.

Before we start, I have something important to say: Aldi’s coffee (especially their ground coffee) pleasantly surprised me. With price points around $7.50 or lower, my expectations weren’t very high. But I would choose anything on this list over Folgers and Starbucks ground coffee any day. That’s right, folks. The best ground coffee at Aldi can totally compete with (win against) your favorite budget-friendly brews. So let’s get into it.

Caramel Macchiato Coffee

Best Flavored K-Cups

Caramel Macchiato Coffee

Unless you only enjoy coffee that’s alarmingly, painfully sweet, you MUST avoid the flavored oat milk latte Aldi K-Cups at all costs. They taste like processed sugar and melted candles. Go for something way lighter, like these caramel macchiato K-Cups, which have a bright, almost crisp caramel sweetness on the finish. These are the opposite of cloying and easily one of the best Aldi coffee options for a quick, cozy cup.

Hazelnut Flavored Ground Coffee

Best Flavored Ground

Hazelnut Flavored Ground Coffee

I can’t say this is the best hazelnut flavored ground coffee I’ve ever had (that honor belongs to Don Fransisco’s), but it comes pretty darn close. Flavored coffee that isn’t overly fake tasting is a huge win in my book. This has that silky, buttery, obvious hazelnut thing going for it, but it never crosses the line into artificial or cloying.

Colombia Medium Roast Ground Coffee

Runner Up, Best Medium Roast

Colombia Medium Roast Ground Coffee

Colombian roast for under $8 sounds pretty suspect, but again, Aldi pleasantly surprised me. It’s not outstanding, but you do get that hint of fruit with every sip, and the acidity is really balanced. It would be higher on this list if I didn’t find another medium roast that tastes very similar, but slightly fuller and smoother. (More on that below.)

Donut Store Medium Roast Arabica Blend Ground Coffee

Best Light-Medium Roast

Donut Store Medium Roast Coffee

Donut Store Medium Roast Arabic calls itself a medium roast, but in my opinion it leans pretty light. Not super light, but it’s definitely the brightest of the blends I tried, while still having a fairly full-bodied flavor. I think this is the best Aldi coffee for a French press, which could really bring that roastier medium depth out of the profile.

German Medium Roasted Ground Coffee

Best Low Acidity

German Medium Roasted Ground Coffee

If someone wants to explain the insane packaging on Barissimo’s German roasted coffee bags, please, I’m all ears. This stiff, vacuum-packed brick of ground coffee is impossible to open without a sharp edge. Theoretically, this would maintain freshness, but it tears in a way that makes storing it pretty tricky. Anyways, now that I’ve complained about packaging, I’ll say this: I’m a big fan of the smooth, low-acidity, full-bodied flavor of Barissimo’s German roasts. This medium roast is a little bright, but mostly rounded, not acidic, and easy on the finish. Some might find it muted, but I think the flavor is pretty rich. In fact, I liked this German line so much…

German Dark Roasted Ground Coffee

Best Diner Coffee Dupe

German Dark Roasted Ground Coffee

… I put both the medium and dark roasts on this list, too. Out of all the coffees I bought, this is actually the product I took home. I’m partial to low acidity and full flavor, and that’s what you get with this dark roast. It’s not very complex, but still incredibly rich and a little chocolatey. It’s super comforting and easy-going. The flavor will remind you of the best diner coffee you’ve ever had. I could go through mugs and mugs of this stuff.

Fair Trade Single Origin Sumatra Dark Roast Ground Coffee

Best Earthy

Sumatra Dark Roast Ground Coffee

This Sumatra blend from Aldi was the first one I brewed for this taste test, and I definitely started on a high note. It’s not as intense as the Sumatra coffee from Starbucks, but I actually appreciate that—you still get those earthy, bitter notes with an undertone of spice without the burn of Starbucks’ potent acidity. While I think it’s one of the best Aldi coffees you can buy, it’s bright in a medium-roast kind of way, so fans of Sumatra might wish this was a little bolder overall. Still, Aldi shoppers: Buy this.

Barissimo Adventure Ground Coffee

Best Medium Roast

Barissimo Adventure Ground Coffee

When I tried the Adventure Blend side-by-side with the Colombia Medium Roast, I wasn’t convinced they tasted very different, especially with milk or cream (really, you can’t go wrong with either one). It has the same fruitiness as the Colombian blend, which is its most prominent flavor note. After a minute, though, I realized this does have a slightly smoother, less acidic finish. It’s just more rounded and balanced overall, a real crowdpleaser. If you have a family to wake up in the morning, this is the best coffee at Aldi to keep stocked. Everyone will love it.

Barissimo Midnight Blend

Best of the Best

Barissimo Midnight Blend

Aldi’s “Midnight Blend” is a strong dark roast brew that has a bold yet well-rounded depth of flavor. It’s roasty but super smooth, with notes of toasted nuts and tobacco. Yes, I’m serious about the tobacco—there’s a hint of smokiness here that’s really addictive and unique. But I won’t get too flowery with my praise, okay? Midnight Blend’s complexity and robust profile makes it the best coffee from Aldi I’ve tried to date, and that’s all you need to know! Go buy it!!
