From the brand that brought you Tapatio-, Chamoy-, and Warheads-flavored Pickles, Van Holten’s, comes another unexpected new flavor of pickle. I did a double take when I first saw it at the Sweets & Snacks Expo in Indianapolis: a Pringles Sour Cream & Onion-flavored pickle! While we believe that Pringles makes the best sour cream and onion chips, will that flavor taste good on a pickle? I found one at my local Five Below, so let’s find out.
New Pickle!
Van Holten’s Pringles Sour Cream & Onion Pickle In-A Pouch
Pros: Well, this sure delivers with the onion portion of the sour cream and onion flavor profile, both in taste and smell. The pickle itself is VERY crisp and crunchy, which certainly adds to the experience. As much as I anticipated this snack to be overly salty, I am pretty satisfied with the level of savoriness.
Cons: It’s. Just. Onion. The onion overpowers the sour cream flavor and any element of Pringles that might be there. In fact, the onion ALMOST overpowers the pickle itself. Chewing a pickle and getting nothing but onion flavor is a weird experience. I don’t know if I like it. I don’t know what exactly I was expecting with this but I’m disappointed.
Verdict: If you really, really, really like onion flavored things, this might be for you. It’s just not a repeat buy for me and I probably won’t even eat the whole pickle.
