Is Mountain Dew Dropping a New Trolli Soda This Year?

Last year, Mountain Dew and Trolli debuted a sour gummy worm-flavored soda for Halloween. Reviews were mixed; our official Sporked review was much kinder than I would have been personally. Lots of the conversation around the soda boiled down to confusion that a candy-flavored soda was released exclusively in zero-sugar. Trolli doesn’t make zero-sugar candy, so this zero-sugar Mountain Dew was already fighting an uphill battle.

Well, it looks like we’re going around this carousel one more time. Per my ever-reliable sources, it looks like we’ll see a new Mountain Dew x Trolli soda hit shelves later this year… in full sugar. Gasp. Let’s get into what we do (and don’t) know about this release.

Where did this news come from?

Last month, an anonymous individual posted a photo of a “test can” to social media. While the original poster’s watermark was scrubbed from the version that ended up on my desk, I have no reason not to believe it. While there’s no shortage of lazy “what if” flavor concepts made with AI online, the photo displays no obvious signs of AI fakery (which I’ve spent a depressing amount of time learning how to discern). Plus, those fakes usually aim to look like final renders rather than unassuming pre-production samples; the former gets way more clicks, which is why I did some old-fashioned Photoshop work to create the mockup seen above.

After sharing the flavor information found on the test can’s label with a few sources, I got multiple responses all boiling down to “that lines up with what we’ve heard.” It’s not official, but it’s as official as unofficial gets.

What’s the rumored new Mountain Dew/Trolli soda flavor?

Per the label on that believable photo of the test can, the new Mountain Dew x Trolli soda flavor is Mango Pineapple. While last year’s Mountain Dew x Trolli Cherry-Lemon is such a classic Trolli flavor that the brand previously made it into a popsicle, Mango Pineapple debuted in Trolli’s Sour Duo Crawlers bag just three years ago. Of course, mango and pineapple are a popular fruit combination outside of Trolli; it’s just interesting to see this over Trolli’s other OG paired flavors: Strawberry-Grape or Orange-Lime.

Will we see Mountain Dew x Trolli Mango Pineapple in zero sugar?

At this time, I haven’t seen or heard anything to suggest we’ll see this new Mountain Dew x Trolli soda in zero-sugar. That said, it’d be weird to release a soda in only zero sugar and then follow it up the next year with a similar soda in only full sugar. This entire situation is already weird as it is; we’ll just have to wait and see what shakes out as more news breaks. Stay tuned for updates!
