The New Liquid I.V. Flavor Tastes Like Candy—Is That a Good Thing?

When do you typically drink Liquid I.V.? Jury’s out on whether anyone really ever needs to replenish electrolytes unless they’re barfing, pooping, or sweating their brains out, but if you’re like me, we can agree that a tall glass of an electrolyte drink really hits the spot after a night of heavy drinking. (When I’m being smart, I have one before bed; when I’m being stupid and lazy, I wait till the morning and hope for the best.) And now you can incorporate a little nostalgia into your after-dark revelry because Liquid I.V. just launched a zero sugar Cherry Ring Pop flavor.

I got good and hammered (jk…or am I jking?) and downed a packet to find out whether a sugar-free hangover helper should taste like jewelry you suck on. Here’s my verdict.

New Product!

Liquid I.V. Ring Pop Cherry Sugar-Free

Pros: I mean, this new Liquid IV flavor really does taste like a cherry Ring Pop. It’s punchy and tangy, and it has that extra sugary flavor that almost reminds me of cotton candy, which is a feat considering there’s no sugar in the mix at all. The flavor becomes tougher to nail down as you drink, but the first sip is a trip.

Cons: Considering how accurate the flavor is—apart from the pronounced flavor of stevia and allulose on the finish—the question I have to ask myself is, “Do you really want to guzzle liquid candy when you’re hungover?” Personally, I do not. If I’m reaching for a sugar free Liquid IV flavor in the future, it’s going to be something refreshing like Lemon-Lime or Raspberry Lemonade (which I currently have in my pantry and really like). But if that hyper-sweet candy flavor sounds like it’ll be rejuvenating after a grueling workout or a reckless night out, you just might love this stuff.

Gwynedd Stuart

Howdy! I’m Gwynedd, Sporked’s managing editor. I live in Los Angeles and have access to the best tacos the U.S. has to offer—but I’m a sucker for a crunchy Old El Paso taco night every now and then. I’ve been at Sporked since 2022 and I’m still searching frozen mozzarella sticks that can hold a candle to restaurant sticks. Why you should trust me: I’ve been a journalist for 20 years (yikes), a consumer of food for 40-plus years, and I’m truly hard pressed to think of foods I don’t like (or that I can’t tolerate at the very least). Oh and one time I cooked my way through Guy Fieri’s cookbook and wrote about the journey through Flavortown. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s Original Savory Thins. Fat free plain yogurt (usually Fage or Nancy’s). Honeycrisp apples. Sweet cream coffee creamer for my at-home Americanos. A frozen cauliflower crust pizza and some jarred mushrooms to top it with. Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells and Gardein Ground Be’f, even though I think “be’f” is a nightmarish contraction. Favorite ranking: Stouffer’s frozen dinners. I don’t own a microwave (I get my cancers the old fashioned way!), so I love taste testing things that I don’t really buy to eat at home. Least favorite ranking: Soy sauce. Don’t get me wrong, I love soy sauce—but consuming that much sodium in one sitting is probably illegal in some countries. Our frozen enchilada taste test was a close second; the smell of microwaved corn tortillas still haunts me.
