Plus it’s sweetened with fruit sugars and strawberry concentrate.

While just about everyone loves gummy candies, they can be problematic for vegetarians and vegans, as they often feature animal-derived gelatin. (It was something we had to note in our ranking of the best gummy candies around.)
But now Trader Joe’s has come up with a new gummy treat that doesn’t contain any gelatin and has zero grams of sugar per serving.
Trader Joe’s Sweet & Sour Gummy Worms Have No Sugar Per Serving
Yep, these new “fruity flavor” gummy worms advertise themselves as having “zero grams of sugar per serving.” How do they pull that off? By using a blend of allulose (a naturally occurring fruit sugar found in foods like figs and raisins), organic erythritol (a type of sugar alcohol found in corn), and monkfruit extract. So, there’s definitely sugar, just not the refined version you’re used to seeing in gummy worms, or coating the outside of them.
What Do the New Gummy Worms Taste Like?
As for the “fruity flavor,” that comes from strawberry juice concentrate. And there’s also got plenty of citric acid, which should provide a pretty impressive sour taste.
And They’re Vegetarian-Friendly?
As for the gelatin, it looks like these worms replaced the gelatin with pectin, a polymer found in citrus fruits that causes items to gel. It’s often used in traditional jams and jellies. But while this might sound like a great thing for vegetarians, the bag does mention that the worms might contain egg products, presumably from cross contamination in the factory.
Man, this was really starting to sound like the perfect gummy. What a shame it was spoiled by possible egg products in the mix, right? But egg or no egg, I’m going to be chomping on these gummy worms whenever I can find them.
