William Shatner: Actor. Icon. Food fan. The Canadian Star Trek superstar is known for many things, but that last one might be slightly less expected – we know Mr. Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk, after all, and Kirk was more focused on the week’s mission at hand and travelling between galaxies than cooking up a storm.

But Shatner’s different. The man knows his food, and on a 2019 episode of the Your Last Meal with Rachel Belle podcast, he revealed to the world what the last thing he would eat on this Earth would be. By “last meal,” by the way, we’re totally working with the presumption that it’s the last meal before he jets off to a nearby solar system, in true Star Trek fashion. Anyway, let’s get into it.

Sushi Or Mexican?

In his podcast episode, Shatner found it tough to pick just one last meal or, rather, the cuisine that he would opt for – instead, he picked two. For the actor, it’s a toss-up between sushi or Mexican food. On the sushi front, he stated that he was a “real sushi aficionado,” stating that he loves the simplicity and the complexity of the Japanese cuisine. This is a man with taste, people.

That said, Shatner then quickly pivoted to Mexican food, praising it extensively and stating that it was the cuisine that he was most into at the moment. He pointed out the sophistication of good Mexican food and highlighted how the cuisine is taking its place in the world, and rightly so. Shatner discussed the glory of simply, but effortlessly delicious rice and beans – and he also said that he had been “looking at mole with some interest.” Given that this podcast debuted six years ago, we’d love to know if he’s finally tried it.

So, it looks like it’s a toss-up between the two foods for Shatner’s potential last meal…maybe a coin flip is in order.

Avocado Toast

Shatner also spent much of his time on the podcast discussing a perhaps unexpected dish, and one that, in 2019, was really making waves: Avocado toast. The actor seemed to be mixed on the concept, and said that one key aspect people forgot about was the bread itself. “The avocado toast depends a lot on the toast,” he stated, saying that it can’t be too crisp, but it can’t be too mealy. “Somewhere between is the ultimate toast.”

The actor also mentioned that he had recently had an avocado toast  “that was so much more tasty than others I have had,” thanks to a sprinkle of honey layered into the avocado. Sweetness is the key, folks.
