Now and again, a little nugget of food news comes along that makes me feel, if not quite like a kid again, like I’m slightly younger, more hopeful, more whimsical than perhaps I am today. A lot of the time, that comes with word of a revitalization of a brand once thought lost. Today, it’s Wonka’s turn. Everyone’s favorite fictional chocolate is making a comeback, with a whopping 10 new products being rolled out this fall by Ferrero Group. Somewhere, little Charlie Bucket is rejoicing at the news.

But what’s coming? And how did this all come about? Oh, you bet I’m gonna tell ya.

Wonka’s Comeback: Years In The Making

The Wonka brand, which, of course, stems from 1964’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and its subsequent film adaptations, has been around for decades and has changed hands several times over the course of its history. It was owned by Nestlé until 2018, when the company’s candy business was subsequently purchased by Ferrero Group. Nestlé had phased out the Wonka candy line a couple of years before this.

Since then, Ferrero’s been working to develop the brand’s new line, and now, this fall, it’s making its grand return. “We’re excited to be introducing a new Wonka family of products, starting with chocolate, sugar confectionery, ice cream and cereals,” says Ferrero Group’s premium chocolate president, Alessandro Rapali, in its press release. “Behind the scenes, our research, development and innovation teams have been carefully leveraging decades of experience in real chocolate factories, applying Ferrero’s signature quality and craftsmanship, and bringing to life a new Wonka world – one that we can’t wait to offer to Wonka fans.”

So, What’s Coming?

We don’t have the exact details on what Ferrero’s got planned just yet, but we know that we’re getting 10 limited-edition and seasonal products to start with. Some of these will be chocolate (duh), but there will also be Wonka cereal, ice creams, and sweets. These products will be available across the UK and in certain European markets.

Wonka’s comeback is also being mounted in collaboration with Netflix, with the streaming service and Ferrero working in partnership to create and promote the new items. (Interestingly, collaborations between the behind-the-scenes aspects of the Wonkaverse and the food world are nothing new: The 1971 film adaptation was fully funded by Quaker Oats, which received the rights to use the Wonka name on their products in return). Netflix is currently working on an animated version of the story for a 2027 release, and a reality show inspired by the hunt for a golden ticket. There was a fairly conspicuous lack of Wonka-branded candy when the 2023 Timothée Chalamet movie came out (although it did pop up here and there, but in very limited forms), so this release looks to be partly an attempt not to miss the boat on the next one. Chalamet, incidentally, does not reach for a Wonka bar when he wants a treat — but come fall, he can.
