So you want to know how long a food will last? You’ve come to the right person for such knowledge. I say with complete sarcasm because I have never once worried about the Best By Date on food. Legally, I have to now follow up by saying we will get into the actual science behind what’s going on with your ketchup. We want you to do things the right way (aka not how I do them at all).

How Long Does Ketchup Really Last?
Generally speaking, ketchup should hold its quality anywhere from 6-12 months. In fact, the date on your bottle of ketchup is merely a Best By Date: an arbitrary date that just means the food you have will be at its peak quality. That said, ketchup is a tough beast for a number of reasons, so we really don’t have to worry about it going bad too quickly.
It’s made to last both by design and by nature. Ketchup producers know we’re bad at throwing out bottles of ketchup, so they make those containers as airtight as possible to help keep the bad players out. Additionally, vinegar is a major ingredient in ketchup. The high acidity that the vinegar adds helps to preserve the product even further.
However, that doesn’t mean ketchup can’t go bad. Like with any food, you want to periodically check your ketchup for any mold, off odors, or any other red flags as you work your way through the bottle. Now if this was all about me and how I live my life, we’d just skip to this step. I toss anything with major signs (swelling packaging, foul smells, atypical fuzz) and just dig into the rest. Don’t be like me, though.
So Should You Refrigerate Your Ketchup?
We’ve finally arrived at the question everyone wants answered. The simple answer is that it all comes down to personal preference. By design, ketchup can be stored in your pantry just fine. While refrigerating will slow down any potential bacteria that finds its way into your bottle, ketchup is rarely a risk for making you sick. What it comes down to is this: do you like your ketchup served at room temp or chilled right out of the fridge? Personally, I’m in the latter camp.
