Every few weeks, the internet finds a new dessert to obsess over. Right now, it’s dot cakes.

If your social media feeds―and perhaps your dreams―have suddenly been taken over by colorful, sprinkle-covered cakes being dramatically sliced open, you’re not imagining things. Dot cakes are everywhere right now and they don’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

The brightly colored treats have taken over TikTok, with videos of creators slicing into the desserts spreading rapidly across the platform. Search interest in “dot cake” recently surged more than 850% in a single week, and bakeries selling them have attracted lines stretching around city blocks.

So what exactly is a dot cake, and why can’t people stop watching them?

What Is a Dot Cake?

A dot cake is exactly what it sounds like: a cake covered in dots.

More specifically, it’s a cake decorated with nonpareil sprinkles—the tiny, spherical sprinkles that somehow end up absolutely everywhere the second you open the container. The viral version popularized by The Dot Cakes layers cake and frosting into a cup before topping it with a thick blanket of colorful nonpareils for a surprisingly crunchy finish. The visual does a lot of the heavy lifting here. The sprinkle-covered top looks oddly perfect and the slice-open reveal is exactly the kind of satisfying content TikTok was built for.

Why They’re So Trendy

The trend can largely be traced back to Alex and Sondra Posner, the mother-daughter founders of The Dot Cakes in Roslyn, New York. The pair have turned their colorful cake cups into one of the internet’s latest dessert obsessions. What started as a local business has become a viral sensation, with long lines, sold-out drops, and countless copycats appearing online.

The Posners have been selling their cakes through limited-time drops at Butterfield Market on New York’s Upper East Side, where demand has reportedly drawn lines around the block. They also recently appeared on Good Morning America, which is usually a good sign that a food trend has escaped its niche corner of the internet.

Why are they so popular? Part of it is the visual. Part of it is nostalgia. Nonpareils have big childhood birthday party energy. They’re the sprinkles that showed up on grocery store cookies, ice cream cones, and cakes that somehow always stained your tongue a different color. And part of it is the simplicity. Underneath all the hype, a dot cake is just cake, frosting, and sprinkles. There isn’t some secret ingredient or revolutionary baking technique hiding underneath those tiny colorful dots.

Like any viral food, though, dot cakes have their critics. Some people think there’s too much frosting. Others think they’re essentially glorified sprinkle cupcakes. Entire comment sections have been dedicated to debating whether they’re worth standing in line for. Which, if we’re being honest, is probably helping the trend. The internet loves discovering a new food―it loves arguing about one even more. Will dot cakes still be everywhere six months from now? Maybe. Maybe not.

But for now, they’re having a moment. And considering they’re made from cake, frosting, and an aggressive amount of sprinkles, it’s hard to be too surprised.
