Eggo’s New Waffles Don’t Have A Lot In Them

For a brand that specializes in making fairly basic foods (those foods being waffles and pancakes), Eggo manages to get a lot of mileage out of its flagship products. We’re talking new flavors, new varieties, protein waffles and pancakes, and a line of syrups that dropped just a couple of months ago.

That last one is important, as now it seems as though Eggo’s going in the other direction. It’s just been announced that it’s got a new waffle coming out that’s free of…everything. Huh? Yeah. Let’s talk about it.

New Eggo Zero Waffles

In a press release yesterday, Eggo told the world of the arrival of its new Eggo Zero Waffles, its first-ever waffle product to have zero grams of added sugar. Yeah, that’s right – zero grams! “We know today’s consumers are looking for more from their breakfast – they want options that fit their lifestyles without giving up the foods they grew up loving,” said Eggo’s growth and marketing lead, Cara Tragseiler, in a statement. “With Eggo Zero, we brought together the things consumers tell us matter most: great taste, protein and less sugar.”

So, it’s got to be flavoring these with artificial sweeteners, right? No. Eggo Zero Waffles also has no artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors, or colors. Plus, they continue in the gym-friendly vein that Eggo set off on with its protein waffles and pancakes. Its two flavors, Buttermilk and Blueberry, have 12 and 11 grams of protein, respectively.

So…They’re Not Sweet At All?

That’s not quite the case. Eggo Zero Waffles do have added sweeteners, but they come in the form of monk fruit extract and stevia extract, both of which have zero sugars and calories. These sweeteners don’t have exactly the same flavor as sugar, but in packaged foods like these, they come close enough, most of the time. Eggo Zero Waffles don’t launch in stores until July, so we’re not quite sure yet how much the brand’s stuck the landing here – but we’ll be keeping an eye on early reviews to assess what these actually taste like.

Speaking of July, these waffles will retail at a suggested price of $5.99 per eight-count box, and will most likely be available fairly widely. It’s Eggo, after all: These products aren’t exactly niche. Are you excited about these? Are you not? Maybe you don’t care either way and want to stick to your regular waffles, which would also be totally fine. They’re a winner for a reason, after all.
