We Tried Pumpkin Pie M&Ms (And We’re Relieved)

As much as we can try to exist the turn towards fall, however, premature we inevitably must face the fact that consumer products and store trends have officially launched us into the cozier season. The first week of August is admittedly, a little bit jarring, but considering the fact that companies like Chobani have already had their pumpkin spice-flavored products on shelves for around a month at this point, I’d say making it all the way until August is somewhat of an accomplishment at this point.

Well, at least M&Ms is among the bunch that waited until August to release their fall flavor for this year. The return of the pumpkin pie M&Ms has sparked mixed reactions after initially mixed reviews. So, when this flavor reached stores this year we knew we would have to let you all know what our official Sporked review is on the matter.

Here’s How We Feel

There is this trope that is inevitable for seasonal products to fall into every once in a while, especially those flavored like pumpkin pie and pumpkin spice. That trope, of course, is the aggressively perfumy candle-like flavor that you get when you try to integrate artificial flavors into pre-existing products to give them a seasonal feel. It’s always a bit of a relief when something, despite even being artificially flavored, doesn’t fall into that category.

Fortunately for us, these pumpkin pie flavored M&Ms dodged that aggressively perfumy flavor in such a way that maintains these being an enjoyable eat. Granted, you still have to like the flavor of pumpkin pie to begin with, but the fear it being too strong shouldn’t be much of a concern. In fact, these seasonal M&Ms are refreshingly subtle. Especially with things pumpkin spice or pumpkin pie flavored I think it’s all too common to try a first bite or two and love the flavor, and then ultimately not be able to finish the snack because it’s too strong and not well-rounded enough to be able to eat a lot of. Thankfully, these aren’t like that. In fact, if you’re eating these mindlessly you might even forget their unique entirely except for the occasional hit of some unique spices.

The thing I do find strange about these M&Ms is the fact that there isn’t any filling in the candies, and yet they are still thicker and more bulbous than the traditional M&Ms. You would expect with a rounder M&M that is flavored that it would be filled, but it’s actually just flavoring within the chocolate itself, and I guess they’re giving you a bit more to chew on per bite for this seasonal item. That’s not really so much as a complaint as it is just a note on the strange shape so as to mitigate any potential disappointment from people who might have been thinking along the same lines as me.
