Eggo Syrup Is Finally Back In Stores After Almost 20 Years

When I think of nostalgic foods, ripe with childhood joy, it’s hard not to consider an Eggo waffle. Whether they were part of your daily routine or an elusive snack as they were for me, Eggos brought together convenience and a perfectly sweet kids-favorite breakfast. And along with strolling through the aisles of the grocery store holding onto my mom’s hand and oggling at every sweet delicious thing I saw came the inevitable encounter with that irresistible-looking waffle-shaped Eggo syrup bottle.

Mature palate aside, the thought that with my own adult volition I could go out to the store and finally try the illustrious syrup evaded me when they were removed from stores and discontinued nearly two decades ago. But, just this year we were teased with their return. This time they’re going to be produced by someone else, though, and there are a couple of big differences with the new version. But, alas, they have returned nonetheless. As of last week, the new Eggo syrups were spotted in Kroger locations. Let’s break down this exciting news together, shall we?

A New Syrup, But A Return All The Same

For starters, these five (yes, you read that right!) new syrups are being produced by a different company to the syrup’s predecessor. What used to be a collaboration with Kellogg’s is now going to be coming from Golding, sauce aficionados. And, of course, the launch will see the return of the iconic ‘Buttery’ Eggo syrup.

Perhaps the biggest downside to this launch though is that they’ve gotten rid of the novelty-shaped bottle. Instead of each bottle being shaped like a squeezable waffle, they’re in more traditional cylindrical bottles. With that concession, though, comes the good news that these new syrups are going to be made without any high fructose corn syrup and artificial flavors.

Every New Flavor

Above all though, the most exciting part about this launch is most certainly the five flavors they’ve included in the lineup. There’s classic maple syrup, and the ‘Buttery’ flavor, of course. With any hope, the flavor will be reminiscent of the classic Eggo syrup from nearly twenty years ago. But, with a new manufacturer and a new recipe, we’re not getting our hopes too high that it will taste exactly like the previous version.

The rest of the flavors in the collection kick up more intrigue. The blueberry and cinnamon flavors sound like they’ll add a unique, but simple twist to classic breakfasts. But the most interesting flavory in the launch screams 2026 food trends. I mean, ‘Sweet & Spicy’ has dominated the recent food trend cycles. So, it makes perfect sense to translate it to a syrup too. Plus, this flavor sounds pretty versatile. Since it’s a little bit spicy, I could easily see this being translated to a savory dish (chicken and waffles, anyone?).

Overall, we’re still holding out hope that these syrups are satisfying and perhaps leaning more into the natural maple territory. But until these are more widely distributed, we’re just going to have to wait and see. Next time you’re strolling do the aisles of your local Kroger, you may just be struck with the familiar glimpse of Eggo syrup on the shelves with nearly five choices of what to try first.
