There are weekly BOGOs, digital coupons, personalized Club Publix perks, store-specific deals, and even rain checks for sale items that sell out. A beginner can walk out with a perfectly good bag of groceries while accidentally leaving some savings behind. So here are five of the most common Publix shopping mistakes worth avoiding.

Skipping Club Publix

The first mistake is also one of the easiest to fix: shopping without a free Club Publix account. Club Publix gives members access to digital coupons, personalized offers, BOGO information, shopping lists, purchase history, and other perks. Members can also get an early look at the weekly ad. There’s even a birthday treat for eligible members.

A new shopper who signs up but then forgets to enter the phone number associated with the account at checkout can also miss out on applicable digital coupons and perks.

Ignoring Weekly Ads

Some first-time Publix shoppers aren’t even aware that there’s such a thing as “Weekly Ad” section in Publix. That can be an expensive mistake. All you have to do is click Savings, then go to Weekly Ad, and then choose your local store to view the weekly ad for your area.

Assuming Every BOGO Works The Same Way

“Buy one, get one free” sounds pretty straightforward. Publix, however, has a state-by-state wrinkle that beginners should know about.

Some states allow shoppers to buy just one item from a BOGO promotion at half price, while other states require the shopper to purchase both items to receive the free product.

There are also promotions with different requirements. A Buy Two, Get Two Free deal, for example, requires four qualifying products to receive the full promotion. So read the actual sale details instead of making any assumptions.

Publix features at least 30 BOGO deals each week, so these promotions can be a major way to save money.

Clipping A Digital Coupon And Forgetting The Phone Number

This one is practically designed to cause checkout regret. Publix digital coupons are saved to a shopper’s Club Publix account. But clipping a coupon online isn’t the final step. You need to enter your account’s 10-digit phone number at checkout for the coupon to be applied to an eligible purchase.

Digital coupons also have their own requirements and expiration dates. Publix says most manufacturer coupons can only be used once, while some coupons allow multiple redemptions if the offer specifically says so.

Walking Away Empty-Handed When An Item Is Gone

A popular Publix deal can disappear from the shelf surprisingly quickly. But that doesn’t always mean the savings opportunity is dead.

Publix offers rain checks for certain advertised sale items that are out of stock. The company says rain checks can be requested through Customer Service and are generally valid for 30 days. The policy allows up to eight single items or up to four deals, with a maximum of 20 items overall.
