You’re making us blush, Wendy’s! A couple of months ago, we were writing about what Wendy’s customers were asking for from the brand – and there’s a lot that they think it could improve on. Amongst requested changes like the revival of classic recipes and the tweaking of new ones came an aesthetic one that neatly summed up what people felt the restaurant had lost: Its charm. Time and time again, Wendy’s customers on Reddit say that they miss its own yellow packaging, and that they want it back.

We (well, I) said that changing the packaging “would be an easy win for the company” back in May. And now…it’s just done that. Not to make it all about us, but…

Out With The New, In With The Old

A few days ago, Wendy’s confirmed that it was bringing back the yellow color scheme for its burger, fries, and shakes and removing the red and white packaging that it’s been using for years –and in doing so, it hopes to recapture the nostalgia and charm that many people feel the brand has lost. “Fans have been asking for its return for years, making it one of the most requested comebacks in Wendy’s history,” said a Wendy’s spokesperson to Allrecipes. “Yellow has been part of Wendy’s since the very beginning and is something many fans instantly recognize.”

According to Instagram food content creator @chrisfrez, this change is coming pretty quickly. Customers can expect to see the yellow packaging, in all its retro glory, back in stores from around September 28 onward.

A Mixed Response

News of Wendy’s revival of its yellow packaging was greeted warmly by some customers – but not all of them. Some people praised the chain for the change, while others said that its leadership should be applauded. It does have to be said, though, that if @chrisfrez’s Instagram post is anything to go by, they might be in the minority. People aren’t necessarily upset about the change itself, but more that Wendy’s should perhaps be focusing on other things than housing its fries in yellow cups instead of red ones. “I couldn’t care less about the yellow packaging. Bring back the old food,” said one comment. “The hamburgers and fries were much better before 2020. The current food isn’t worth a visit.” Wendy’s CEO Bob Wright recently stated that the restaurant would try to address customer concerns around food quality and value, but so far, people aren’t convinced.
