The things I do for you, my friends. I’ve foregone my usual, delightful mocha to try out its unusual cousin caffeinated bone broth hot cocoa. That is truly a sentence I never thought I would say. Before we get into the review, let’s go over a bit of a refresher on what’s going on.

Ballerina Farms recently launched a caffeinated version of their beloved bone broth hot cocoa. Now was it beloved by me? No. In fact, I had no idea it existed so when this came across my virtual desk, it was noteworthy.
Each serving of Ballerina Farm’s new caffeinated bone broth hot cocoa delivers 25g of protein per serving from bone broth and collagen and 80mg of natural caffeine from guarana. The rest of the powder’s filled out with cocoa, coconut sugar, and monk fruit. It aims at giving the same boost as a morning latte without the jittery spike. The question now is, how is it?
Ballerina Farm’s Caffeinated Bone Broth Hot Cocoa
Pros: Genuinely, and surprising to me, this just tastes like Swiss Miss hot cocoa mix which is a huge relief. I really can’t explain the flavor any more than that. The resulting mix is a little thicker than regular hot chocolate, but I would imagine that’s just the bone broth doing its thing.
I fully expected this to have an off taste or a weird aftertaste at the very least. I should have gone into this one a little more open minded, but I’m just doing my best here. If anything, it’s a testament to Ballerina Farms that they could win me over. Well, let me use that phrase carefully. I can see the appeal of this drink. Is it the right fit for me? Not quite. Let’s get into that.
Cons: I guess my body loves the natural jitter that I get from coffee. I had the caffeinated bone broth hot cocoa a few hours ago and I’m already struggling to get through the rest of the day. My body is craving that sweet bean juice and this just isn’t cutting it. I think you’d be fine if you were to eventually get used to this as your daily energizer but just swapping it out for one day is not the move.
The mix itself gets pretty clumpy. While it may taste like Swiss Miss, it certainly isn’t blending into my glass of water with the same effect. I was left with a big swig of watery mix at the end of the glass that did send a shiver down my spine. The instructions recommend mixing it with one or two cups of liquid (milk, water, or otherwise). I used a full two cups of water and still had problems getting the mix to settle into the cup so I just truly can’t imagine what this would have been like with only one.
