It’s time to talk mac and cheese! Again! We’ve brought you a lot of mac and cheese news recently, but then, the discussion of this foodstuff is never far from our hearts, minds, and lips. That said, it’s been a particularly busy time over at Mac And Cheese HQ, clearly. In the last couple of weeks, we’ve discussed the fact that Annie’s is bringing out a duo of new flavors (including a Dill Pickle option) and, in a slightly more out-of-the-box move, that Kraft Mac and Cheese is turning into ramen. Essentially, mac and cheese is increasingly a canvas, a concept, a form to be played with.

And we’re seeing that yet again today. An old-school restaurant chain has decided to step into the mac and cheese world once more, and like the others, it’s doing something a little different.

Bob Evans Protein Macaroni & Cheese

Bob Evans Grocery (owned by a separate company than Bob Evans, the restaurant) has just launched its new Protein Macaroni & Cheese, and in doing so, has stepped up to the high-protein plate, like countless other brands in the last couple of years. Bob Evans already has a couple of ready-to-go and frozen mac and cheese options out there, and it’s no stranger to the premade side dish: We’re particular fans of its microwave mashed potatoes. None of these have been especially protein-forward in the past, though, and now, that’s all changing.

“How much protein will I get in this?” you ask. “18 grams,” I respond. Bob Evans Protein Macaroni & Cheese will pack a pretty hefty portion of your recommended daily allowance for protein into every serving. Judging by its ingredients list, it seems to come from whey – and naturally, from the milk and cheese already in the mac and cheese.

And Where Can I Find It?

Bob Evans Protein Macaroni & Cheese is going to be pretty widely available. It’s launching at stores like Walmart, Kroger, Meijer, and Winn-Dixie, amongst others, and you can find it in the refrigerated section. There’s no sense that it’s a limited-time product, so it might be around for the long haul – but you never know.

Well, hey: If you’re looking to protein-ify every food on your plate, then you’ll probably be happy about this one. Mac and cheese isn’t exactly devoid of the nutrient, and Bob Evans’ standard mac has 10 grams per serving, so this isn’t an enormous overhaul. That said, if you’re having it as an entrée and not just a side, you’ll probably enjoy the slightly more filling nature of it now.
