Backflip Breakfast recently hit shelves at Target nationwide. The new viral cereal brand was co-founded by YouTuber Ben Azelart who, based off a look at his channel, isn’t making content that fits my taste. Luckily for him, and Backflip Breakfast, I’m here to taste the food.

The lineup of cereal includes four flavors: Fruit Galaxy, Strawberry Milkshake, Cinnamon Magic, and Chocolate Sundae. Each cereal has 6g of protein, 40-50% less sugar than leading kids’ cereals, is gluten-free, and contains no synthetic dyes. Here are my thoughts on how they taste.
Chocolate Sundae
Pros: There’s a deeper cocoa flavor to these than you’d find in a Cocoa Puff. Initially I was taken back by it but as I got more used to the flavor, it really grew on me. Don’t get me wrong, I’d still reach for a bowl of Cocoa Puffs, but this is its own thing so I’ll try to respect it. You also get a pleasant bowl of chocolate milk at the end of things so overall they did the chocolate genre of cereal proud with this one.
Cons: Every single one of the Backflip Breakfast cereals is just the base crunchy star that’s coated with the intended flavor. The result leads to a two-step con. The flavor, as you would expect because it’s not added to the whole shebang, starts to wash off in the milk. The flavor washing off then leads you left with the stars that are mostly made up of a few different flours (corn, rice, oat), sugar, and pea protein.
The chocolate sundae does admittedly still taste overly fine even though this did happen. It’s mainly getting mentioned here because it’s first up in the lineup. While I do wish this was chocolatey throughout the whole puff like a Cocoa Puff is, I think it can be written off as an aesthetic desire.
Fruit Galaxy
Pros: This one smells and initially tastes like Trix cereal. Which is certainly what they’re going for with the promise of “bursting fruit flavor.” I also appreciate the tie into the star shape that all four cereals have. This one, for whatever reason, is the only one that actually builds that shape into its branding.
Cons: I specified the initial taste like Trix because the Fruit Galaxy flavor definitely falls victim to the flavor washing off into the milk the hardest. The first few bites are pleasant but then the aftertaste of pea protein starts to build up. It’s only amplified as time goes on and you’re left wishing for that sweet, sugary Twix by the end of the bowl.
Cinnamon Magic
Pros: Off the bat, these really taste like Cinnamon Cheerios. Which are one of my favorite cereals. It’s an impressive feat. This was definitely my favorite cereal of the bunch. You could certainly argue that’s because of the fact that it tastes so similar to Cinnamon Cheerios and honestly I couldn’t argue with that logic. If you’re looking for the same taste with a little less sugar, then you should definitely check this one out.
Cons: Now to our expected con. The flavor does wash off of this one as well. Which is still a con, but I will say that I think this one fairs the best at the loss of some flavor. Maybe it just has more to lose or maybe the milk does a good job at still keeping the flavor in our spoon so we don’t notice it as much. Either way, that’s my only real downside with this one.
Strawberry Milkshake
Pros: You’re hit with a heavy taste of strawberry right off the bat with this cereal. While it is mostly just strawberry, I can only imagine that the “milkshake” of it all comes by adding in the milk. That milk does, as we know, pick up a lot of that flavor that’s lost as time goes on. While the resulting milk isn’t as powerful as the chocolate was, it’s still a nice way to end things off.
Cons: There must be something going on with the fruity Backflip Breakfast cereals. While not as bad as the Fruit Galaxy, the Strawberry Milkshake has the second most noticeable loss of flavor. I’m starting to think it has something to do with the milk. There’s just a slight tinge of pea protein in the back of the throat this time so it holds onto one extra Spork over the strawberry.
