We Tried Ghirardelli’s New Crispy Cookies

After hearing the exciting news of Ghirardelli entering the snack aisle via two crispy cookie varieties, to say that we were interested would be a dramatic understatement. The new crispy cookies come as both a Double Chocolate variety using a chocolate dough and, of course, classic Ghirardelli chocolate chips, as well as the Classic Chocolate Chip cookie that uses a brown sugar-style cookie dough and Ghirardelli chocolate chips.

Naturally, as with any exciting launch in the grocery stores, we were very excited to try these out. So when Ghirardelli offered to send a sample over, we knew we would have to let you all know our honest thoughts so you all can evaluate whether or not you want to try these out for yourselves. Here’s our official Sporked review.

Our Official Thoughts

Pros — Right off the bat, these cookies were remarkably well flavored. It basically tastes like what you would want a Chips Ahoy cookie to taste like if they took away all of the strange artificial aftertastes. And while that can be charming when you’re craving that super nostalgic flavor, it’s not always what you want. These don’t have that quality at all, though, and it’s much more pleasant. Their thickness is similar to your standard crunchy grocery store cookie, but it’s thicker than what you would expect from something like a Tate’s cookie for comparison.

In the case of the Double Chocolate cookies, you could particularly taste the quality of the dark cocoa in the dough itself. The chocolate cookie has a deep and rich cocoa flavor that feels authentic and on brand for the Ghirardelli company. And, of course, the chocolate chips in these are truly unmatched. As is the case with most of the Ghirardelli chocolate chips, these are creamy and complex. It beats out the flavor of any chocolate chips that you would get in an ordinary grocery store chocolate chip cookie by a long shot. If your favorite part of a chocolate chip cookie is the chocolate chips themselves, then these cookies are going to be a great option for you.

Cons — The main issue that I have with these cookies is simply the fact that they are quite crumbly. And with a crispy cookie, that is what we expected to a certain degree. But, when most of the cookies in the pack are no longer in one piece, it can be a bit frustrating. 

The cookies in their are full form are certainly more than one bite though, so if you don’t mind that they’re just a bit more naturally bite-size when they’re broken up then this might even be a plus for you. And it’s possible that it’s simply our testers that came broken up as they were delivered through the mail. Regardless, we would still repurchase these cookies if we had the craving for crispy chocolate chip cookies since the flavor of the chocolate is so superb.
