The best cheap Champagne might not taste like Dom Perignon. But it won’t taste like sparkling apple cider, either. We tasted through more than 25 bottles of cheap Champagne (and Champagne-inspired sparkling wine from the U.S. and France) in search of the best grocery store Champagne (or at least Champagne-esque thing). And we found eight shockingly good bottles—some for sipping on their own, others perfect for Mimosas.
Before we get into the ranking, let me just address the pedants in the room. From one wine snob to another, let’s just acknowledge that most of the bottles on this list aren’t technically Champagne—they’re not from the Champagne region in France. Most are American sparkling wine or sparkling wine from a non-Champagne region in France. But most non-snobs just call all sparkling wine Champagne. So let’s just be chill, okay? With that out of the way, let’s get to how we assessed these bottles.
What we looked for in the best cheap Champagne:
- Cheapness. We set our cap at $20. You can find all of our picks for less than a Jackson.
- Fine bubbles. The best cheap Champagne, like the best non-cheap Champagne, should have fine, delicate bubbles. No big soda bubbles.
- Fruitiness. While it certainly shouldn’t taste like juice, the wine should have some fruity notes—whether you’re talking stone fruit, citrus fruit, berries, etc.
- Toastiness. Real Champagne has a signature toastiness thanks to the yeast. Ergo, the best cheap Champagne (or ersatz Champagne) should have a similar quality.
Whether you’re looking for the best cheap Champagne for Mimosas, the best tasting cheap Champagne for a toast, or the best cheap sparkling rosé, here’s all the best cheap sparkling wine under $20.

- De Bussy ($19)
-
If you love that funky je ne sais quoi of a natural wine, then this is the best cheap Champagne for you. From Saumur-Champigny in the Loire Valley, this sparkling wine is really unique. It has a great minerally flavor that so many Loire wines are known for, along with a bright tartness and a touch of that funk. If you’re looking to impress or at the very least intrigue some nouveau wine snobs, bring this bottle.

- Andre Brut ($5.50)
-
If you’re like me, you remember Andre as the super cheap sparkling wine that you bought by the caseload in college for “fancy” parties. It was usually chugged, not sipped, directly from the bottle. So I was a bit skeptical of our friend Andre. But, honestly, it’s pretty decent—especially when it comes to mixing it with juice. It’s fizzy, fruity (lemony and apple-y), and just a touch sweet. And it’s less than $6 a bottle. And that all makes it the best grocery store Champagne for Mimosas.

- Stanford Governor’s Cuvee ($14)
-
This California-made “Champagne-style” sparkling wine is much fruitier than a lot of the other bottles on this list. If you want your bubbles to be easy drinking and slightly on the sweeter side—without being full on Moscato—then this is the best cheap Champagne to buy. It goes down easy. And, at this price point, it’s also some of the best cheap Champagne for Mimosas or Bellinis if you want to go a step up from Andre.

- Chandon Brut Rose ($17)
-
If you love dry rosé, then give Chandon a go. It’s toasty and extremely dry (we’re talking not sweet at all). And the teeny, tiny bubbles really tickle your nose. It’s one of the best cheap Champagnes to pair with food (yes, I know, it’s from Napa, it’s not Champagne, I told you to chill out). Break it out with a lemony salad or a cheeseboard. Or give it as a gift. It looks expensive even though it costs less than $20.

- La Burgondie ($12)
-
Skip the Trader Joe’s branded sparkling wine, the best sparkling wine at TJ’s is this Crémant de Bourgogne, which is made just like Champagne, it just happens to be from Burgundy. It’s crisp and a little toasty with rich stone fruit notes (peaches, nectarines, etc.) and elegant little bubbles. If you shop at Trader Joe’s, this is the best cheap sparkling wine to snag.

- Jacqueline Leonne ($19)
-
This is a New Mexican sparkling wine—don’t give me that look, this is actually one of two New Mexican sparkling wines on this list. And it’s a good New Mexican Champagne-style wine at that. It’s super clean and bright and light with just a touch of oaky, vanilla sweetness on the finish. It’s neutral in the best way—a way that makes it some of the best cheap Champagne to break out for a toast. You can sip it solo—but it’d also be damn good with a slice of cake.

- Gruet Brut
-
Who would have thought that the best cheap Champagne actually comes from New Mexico. Made in the style of Champagne (aka methode Champagnoise), it has a complex aroma of sage and grape must. It tastes super fruity—lots of lemons and apples—and then finishes crisp and rich. It tastes aged. And it’s just over $15 a bottle. That’s wild. This isn’t just good grocery store Champagne, it’s some of the best tasting cheap Champagne around (tied with Depreville), so stock up.

- Depreville Brut ($15)
-
While Gruet is zippy and lemony, this French sparkling wine leans heavily into the toasty, yeasty side of Champagne. It’s super complex and elegant. It tastes older than it probably is. And no, it’s not technically Champagne because it’s from “France,” in general, rather than the Champagne region. But that won’t stop us from deeming this new addition to our ranking the best cheap Champagne to buy (tied with Gruet, of course).
