When I saw the headline that Cheez-It came out with a cheesy Cheez-It-based “gingerbread” house, my first thought was, “Is this a recession indicator?” My second thought was, “Am I perhaps too chronically online?” And my third thought was “No…there’s no such thing.” I do think it is a recession indicator however: Food is expensive as heck these days, so people are shirking their gingerbread houses made of cardboard-y, store-bought gingerbread and those off-brand, non-candy colorful sugar bits whose destiny is, inevitably, to be thrown in the trash come New Year’s (or to become ant food, whichever happens first), in favor of a whimsical edible house that they will actually…well…eat. Cheez-It knows us so well, and thus they’ve graced us with the Cheez-It Holiday House.

Is all of the Cheez-It Holiday House savory? Does it come with little Slim Jims instead of gumdrops and squeeze cheese instead of frosting and more Cheez-Its instead of basically everything else?

Okay, so this house looks good. But does it look perfect? Well, we will let you be the judge of that and just tell you what this kit comes with.

The house’s components (its walls, roof, etc.) are made of “cheese-flavored” cookies. What does that mean? Great question—we don’t know yet. That could mean a thick, savory, crunchy breadstick type of deal, but more than likely it means a gingerbread-adjacent cookie that is both sweet and cheese-flavored. Untraditional? Sure. Intriguing? Undoubtedly. But they haven’t lost us yet.

To decorate the blank canvas that is “cheese cookie house,” they provide—you guessed it—a bunch of Cheez-Its to use as a front walk, roof shingles, windows, and basically whatever square or rectangular house features your little cheesy architect heart desires. We were still on board at this point. But here is the kicker: the Cheez-It Holiday House, much like a regular gingerbread house, still comes with frosting as the glue and those little inexplicable green and red sugar dots for decoration.

Listen. Maybe the combo of Cheez-It and sugar is great. Maybe in true charcuterie fashion, the cheesy saltiness will combine with the sweet icing to give us something amazing that no one could’ve dreamed up outside of the environment of whimsical, nihilistic desperation that is 2025. Maybe this is that strawberry and cheese scene from Ratatouille and not a tragic affront to the senses. WE DON’T KNOW. But gosh darn it, as Rhett & Link are our witnesses, we intend to find out.

This thing is now available at a bunch of major grocery stores, including Walmart, and retails for $15.76—a price I think is well worth it to surprise, delight, and potentially disgust (only time will tell) your friends and family this holiday season.

Does the new Cheez-It Holiday House jingle your bells?

Ho, ho, huh?
