You know how they say that chocolate is the food of love (oh, you didn’t know they say that? Well, they do)? Well, it’s not actually meant to make you want to go there. Chocolate is often referred to as an aphrodisiac, but the truth is that standard chocolate has no real effects whatsoever. It might be romantic, but it’s not meant to, y’know, make you wanna jump the bones of your partner, given that the tryptophan and phenylethylamine in it, that’s said to cause arousal, are in such low quantities.

So you can imagine how troubling it was when it was discovered that one type of chocolate did contain something that might have an arousing effect, in quantities that could potentially be very dangerous to certain individuals. Gear Isle has just recalled two of its chocolate products as they contained so-called “undeclared” levels of sildenafil and tadalafil, which are found in Viagra. Here’s what we know.
Gear Isle Chocolate: Leave It Out of the Bedroom
The West Sacramento-based company has had to recall two of its chocolates, Gold Lion Aphrodisiac Chocolate Male Enhancement Sachet and Ilum Sex Chocolate Male Sexual Enhancement Booster, after they were found to contain the two active pharmaceutical ingredients that weren’t declared on the label. According to the FDA recall notice, these two substances are risky “because the active ingredient may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs (such as nitroglycerin) and may cause a significant drop in blood pressure that may be life-threatening.” Yikes.
The FDA went on to state that adult males who use nitrates for cardiac conditions would be most at risk from consuming the product, although it did state that Gear Isle hadn’t received any reports of adverse effects in people who had consumed the product. Customers who have purchased the chocolates are advised to return them for a full refund – and, of course, to stop using them.
Supplement or Medication?
Now, we know what you’re thinking: With product names like that, did people honestly think that these chocolates weren’t going to have any effect? Well, it’s not out of the realm of possibility. Gear Isle’s products were labeled as dietary supplements, and there’s a big difference between an item containing something that would normally be found in a prescription medication like Viagra and a food product like Prime’s new creatine drink, which clearly is intended to bolster your regular food intake.
So, you can’t really blame people if they were a bit confused by the, shall we say, intense effect of these chocolates. Thankfully, both products only had one expiration date each, so the unlabeled items will have hopefully been part of a fairly limited batch. The things that food can do these days, huh?
