Costco took the beloved Polish hot dog off of its food court menu way back in 2018 (although you can still find them at Canadian Costco food courts). Here’s what Costco had to say about it: “In order to simplify our menu and make room for healthier options, we have decided to offer only the all-beef Hot Dog. Sales show this is what the majority of members prefer.”

Perhaps it’s what a majority of members preferred, but there are plenty who still mourn the loss of their favorite food court snack. Well, we have good news: You can still satisfy your Costco Polish dog cravings.

What was the Costco Polish hot dog? Why was it special?

The Costco Polish dogs were the same price as the hot dogs, they were also beef-based, but they were spiced differently—specifically, the recipe went heavier on the garlic. Fans preferred them over the all-beef hot dogs because they said they had more flavor than the hot dogs. And then Costco went and took them off the menu to test out new items like the now discontinued roast beef sandwich and the admittedly good calzone. “Healthier options.” Sure.

What is the Costco Polish hot dog dupe?

If you were one of the Polish dog’s devoted fans (or you want to get a taste of the food court of yore), you can still buy it. The catch? You’ll have to cook it yourself. Costco sells Kirkland Signature Beef Polish Sausage at its warehouses. You can get 14 links (that’s almost 4lbs of sausage) for around $20, which means each dog comes in below the $1.50 mark. Although, you’ll have to provide your own drink and bun. So, sure, the food court deal still wins out.

Are they really as good as the food court Polish dogs?

While some fans are skeptical, others swear that these deliver the same experience—if not better. One Redditor says they’re better grilled than boiled.

And if you don’t want to eat them all in one go, one Redditor suggests portioning the dogs out into bags, adding water to prevent freezer burn, and freezing. “Then whenever you want one, you can just defrost a couple of them or cook them from frozen.”

Hi! I’m the editor-in-chief of Sporked. I will never turn down a fresh-shucked oyster but I’ll also leap at whatever new product Reese’s releases and I love a Tostitos Hint of Lime, even if there is no actual lime in the ingredients. Why you should trust me: I have been writing about food and beverages for well over a decade and am an avid at-home cook and snacker. I began my career writing about fine dining and recipes, moved into cocktails and spirits, and now I talk about groceries. If you can eat it or drink it, I’ve probably written about it. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s dried okra. Appleton Farms prosciutto from Aldi. Some sort of Trader Joe’s cheese (I’m into the aged gouda at the moment). Frozen waffles (usually the Eggo Cinnamon Toast Minis). Spindrift water (loving the Cosmopolitan right now). Favorite ranking: Smoked salmon. Imagine me as Scrooge McDuck but instead of coins I’m diving into a vault of slippery smoked salmon slices. Pure joy. I also found some real steals in that taste test! Least favorite ranking: Canned oysters. I had such high hopes for this but it quickly became a chore. The kitchen smelled like an uncleaned aquarium.
