We are living in an era of nostalgia—especially when it comes to food and beverage releases. Between retro Chip’s Ahoy for Stranger Things, a flavor of Crush inspired by the ‘80s, and the return of Alpha-bits Cereal, it’s almost like we’re all longing for another time. But let’s not examine that too closely, because today we’re tasting a Coke flavor that’s a real bast from the past: Diet Cherry Coke.

Diet Cherry Coke originally launched in 1986 and was discontinued in 2020, but it has now been resurrected for a limited time store release at Kroger (and Kroger owned) stores. But it’s not only back—the packaging features the iconic branding from the ‘80s. Well, we secured a sample and now we’re popping it open to determine if this returned retro Coke flavor is worth seeking out for yourself or if it should stay in the past!

Diet Cherry Coke

Returning Coke Flavor!

Diet Cherry Coke Review

Pros: I am always a sucker for good artwork and I am in love with the retro design. It is absolute perfection. Can more brands do the retro branding please? Flavorwise, this has the classic Cherry Coke flavor that I know and that I love. To be completely honest, as I sipped on this, I almost forgot that this was even a diet soda. It goes down smooth and the aftertaste is very inoffensive, which is something that can’t be said about a lot of diet sodas.

Cons: Why is this Diet Cherry Coke returning for just a limited time? Why does the wave of nostalgia need to end? Keep this Coke flavor on shelves year round! On the spectrum of diet sodas, this is far and away one of the best I have ever had.

Verdict: If you like cherry cola, this is worth checking out, whether you’re a nostalgia seeker or a diet soda drinker, this is one for the ages. Run to Kroger to grab it before it’s gone for good.
