Egg Prices Have Finally Dropped—Maybe Too Much

We can’t stop talking about the price of eggs. That’s because they’ve been expensive, folks. Throughout 2025, the cost of this most simple of grocery items skyrocketed, thanks to a noxious cocktail of avian flu, holiday demand, and associated high production costs of things like fuel and feed. That all meant that everyone was paying significantly more, and guess what? It sucked. We either all started using vegan egg substitutes, sucked up the price, or stopped buying eggs entirely.

However, the last few months have seen a big ol’ drop in egg prices, somewhat resetting things to the way they once were: According to recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, we’re currently looking at around $2.58 on average for a carton of a dozen eggs. That’s far from the lowest they’ve been in the last few years, but it’s a lot better than the $6.23 that people were paying in March 2025.

So, everyone’s happy now, right? Not quite. Here’s why.

Customers Are Winning, But Farmers Are Losing

The CEO and president of the American Egg Board, Emily Metz, explained why these lower prices could be an issue in a conversation with CNN. “Our farmers have traded one crisis for another,” she stated. Because of the drop in prices, which has been caused by producers working to get supply back on track, “now they’re in a situation where (farmers are) dealing with historic low wholesale prices, which means that they’re producing eggs below the cost of production.”

So, why is this an issue? Well, these low prices could mean that certain farms may well not be able to compete, and their businesses could end up suffering. “We’re seeing farmers who are struggling in the market, and if these conditions persist, we will lose family farms. And that will be devastating to our industry,” said Metz. Not only does this mean that farms could go out of business, but it could also mean that there are ultimately fewer eggs available later down the line – and then, when another crisis hits, prices could just shoot back up again.

How Can We Stop This From Happening?

The easiest solution to all of this is for everyone to buy more eggs, but according to experts, that isn’t just going to happen overnight – and that’s because over the last year or two, people have changed how they’re shopping. “The high prices of eggs changed habits for the consumer and the exporters, stated Wells Fargo’s Agri-Food Institute’s chief agricultural economist, Michael Swanson. “It will take low prices to get consumers to increase their demand, and that will take time.”

Long-term, an avian flu vaccine could be a solution that reduces the risk of shortages caused by the disease. However, this brings associated risks and supply concerns, as vaccinating birds may affect the United States’ ability to export its eggs. For now, though, it might be worth stocking up on eggs while they’re cheap, for all those deviled eggs you’re gonna whip up for Easter.
