I know it seems like America is more divided than ever, but I’d like to think that many of us can agree that there should be more fried cheese. Everywhere. Always. KFC is doing its part to heal the fissures in our societal structure by putting fried cheese curds on the menu.
Cheese curds are kinda regional—are these KFC cheese curds available everywhere?
They are! They launched just this month as part of a special menu collab with celeb chef (and star of The Bear) Matty Matheson. You can get them as part of Matty’s Cheesy Nuggy Gravy Bowl, an artery-clogging, poutine-esque creation that includes chicken nuggets, fries, and curds, all drenched in gravy, or you can order them on their own.
It looks like you get around 10 curds in an order and I gotta say, they look good. They’re golden and look like they’re battered rather than coated in a thick, heavy breading.
Okay, but are they…squeaky?
Something that distinguishes cheese curds from other hunks of fried cheese: They squeak. According to this helpful Wisconsin Cheese website, cheese curds contain a protein-calcium structure that rubs against the enamel on your teeth creating a squeaky sound.
Do KFC curds squeak? Well, a Wisconsinite over at The Takeout tried them and confirmed that, yes, these babies got some squeak. In fact, their ‘Sconnie correspondent preferred KFC’s cheese curds to Culver’s cheese curds, and that’s something given the state’s Culver’s pride. That’s really saying something. Now, no one on Sporked’s staff grew up in Wisconsin (our boi Vinz is from Minnesota, which is close!), but you better believe we’ll be trying these to find out whether they live up to our high cheese curd standards.
