Mayonnaise is a staple in homes across the country. You need a great mayo on hand for whipping up a chicken salad, slathering on grilled cheese for a crispy outside, and mixing with ketchup for a fire fry sauce. But what is a great mayo? Is it worth shelling out the big bucks for the name brand? We’ve done our own mayo taste test, but you know whose opinion might be worth considering as well? Queen of the billion-dollar media empire built from a home catering business, Martha Stewart.

Martha Stewart’s favorite mayo
The woman has lived a lot of life (we won’t get into that) and still looks fantastic at 84! Could it be because of what mayo she uses? We have to consider that option! Unsurprisingly, Martha often makes her own mayonnaise. That’s a nice thought, until we wake up and smell our laziness. We’re really looking for her jarred option of choice which, according to her book, Martha: The Cookbook, is Hellmann’s! Not for nothing, but that’s her 100th book, so maybe—maybe—the woman knows a little bit about cooking.
The rest of Hellmann’s resume
As a Hellmann’s fan, Martha’s in good company with Julia Child and Ina Garten. If those aren’t stellar recommendations, we really hope we don’t cross paths on a dating app because your standards are really going to hurt our feelings.
Other front-runners
While Ina does like Hellmann’s, she’s also partial to another brand name that consistently comes out as a crowd favorite: Duke’s.
Allrecipies did some heavy lifting to find out where the world stands on mayo brands. Their own taste test had Hellmann’s, Duke’s, Kewpie, and Sir Kensington’s as top choices, but they also asked five professional chefs for the best store-bought mayos. Duke’s came out victorious, earning praise for texture, tang, and versatility. Alton Brown and Stephen Colbert? Also Duke’s fans. Hellmann’s may have Martha’s heart, but when it comes to the battle of mayos, perhaps Hellmann’s has some competition with whom to…………Duke it out.
