What’s this new Buldak flavor?

It’s Birria Buldak! What’s birria? It’s a Mexican dish of slow cooked meat (traditionally goat but often beef) simmered in a chile-spiced broth until it’s super tender and falling apart. The meat is often rolled into tacos and served with a side of broth. But there’s also birria ramen, which is a Japanese-Mexican fusion dish in which ramen noodles are cooked and served in the birria broth. So, it’s not so out of left field for Buldak to choose birria as their newest flavor. Instead of beef or goat, though, Buldak’s birria ramen is made with chicken flavoring.

Where can I get Birria Buldak?

This new Buldak flavor is exclusive to Albertons-owned stores. That means you can find it in places like Safeway, Vons, Shaw’s, Acme, and Jewel-Osco. You can find it in multi-packs and as Big Bowls.

Is Birria Buldak any good?

Early reviews have been pretty positive! The Ramen Rater gave it a 5/5 and noted that while it is advertised as being “chicken flavored” it actually does taste more like beef. A Redditor noted that it’s one of the more mild Buldak flavors—good for beginners—with a very herb-forward flavor. Another commenter in that same post said it was “similar to the taco flavor but with less cumin and more ‘meat’ taste.”

Justine Sterling

Hi! I’m the editor-in-chief of Sporked. I will never turn down a fresh-shucked oyster but I’ll also leap at whatever new product Reese’s releases and I love a Tostitos Hint of Lime, even if there is no actual lime in the ingredients. Why you should trust me: I have been writing about food and beverages for well over a decade and am an avid at-home cook and snacker. I began my career writing about fine dining and recipes, moved into cocktails and spirits, and now I talk about groceries. If you can eat it or drink it, I’ve probably written about it. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s dried okra. Appleton Farms prosciutto from Aldi. Some sort of Trader Joe’s cheese (I’m into the aged gouda at the moment). Frozen waffles (usually the Eggo Cinnamon Toast Minis). Spindrift water (loving the Cosmopolitan right now). Favorite ranking: Smoked salmon. Imagine me as Scrooge McDuck but instead of coins I’m diving into a vault of slippery smoked salmon slices. Pure joy. I also found some real steals in that taste test! Least favorite ranking: Canned oysters. I had such high hopes for this but it quickly became a chore. The kitchen smelled like an uncleaned aquarium.
