Spam isn’t afraid to get a little funky. The canned meat product can sometimes feel as though it’s frozen in time, but the truth is that over the last few years, it’s begun to get pretty experimental with its flavors (many of which we’ve tried, and a lot of which we loved – look, it’s not the healthiest, but it sure tastes good). We’ve had Maple Spam. We’ve had Korean BBQ Spam. We’ve even had Pumpkin Spice Spam. Those fine folks at Hormel will stop at nothing until they’ve taken every taste out there and shoved it into a tin.

Now, Spam’s done it again – but thankfully, it’s with a flavor profile that we can get 100% behind. The brand has collaborated with Bachan’s, a Japanese barbecue sauce that a lot of people have fallen head over heels for. Here’s what to expect from this new option.

Barbecue Spam, Let’s Go

The new Bachan’s Original Japanese Barbecue Sauce flavor from Spam (or, we guess we should say, SPAM, to give it its official, capitalized name) promises to be an umami-rich delight. Bachan’s has a sweet, salty, savory flavor profile that manages to enhance food without intruding on it too much, and it’s shot through with notes of ginger and spring onion to give it a slightly more sprightly effect. Its Yuzu flavor ranked pretty highly in our taste test of barbecue sauces, so we’ve got a lot of love for this brand. It all ties together with Spam’s inherent saltiness and meatiness to make something that we know tastes pretty good.

Spam Bachan’s Original Japanese Barbecue Sauce flavor will have a fair few uses, but the brand is going hard on opting for it in Japanese-inspired combos. Spam musubi, Spam fried rice, and Spam ramen are just a few of its recommendations. They all sound utterly delicious, but we’d also be happy just tucking it into a sandwich, to be honest. This Spam is now available at Walmart’s around the country; you can check out if your local store has it on the Spam website, linked above.

Bachan’s: If You Know, You Know

Bachan’s Japanese Barbecue Sauce may not be the biggest brand out there these days, but the people who love it really love it. Fans of the sauce have dubbed it “nearly magical in its flavor enhancement,” with others chiming in saying how incredible it is.

The only problem is that it can hit the wallet really hard – this stuff isn’t cheap by any means – so if you’ve always wanted to try it without the premium price tag, then maybe check it out in Spam form. If we get our hands on it, we’ll be coming at ya with a taste test. We might just need a glass of water to wash it down. Hey, it’s a salty food.
