Change is afoot at Starbucks. The coffee chain has never remained static for long, but so far in 2026, it seems to be making a lot of new moves and tweaking some of its classic faves. Throughout March, it dropped a bunch of news about what it was up to, including changing how you order and the recipe for its iconic chai latte – and trust us, guys, we kept up with the comments on that latter post, and we get why you were annoyed about that one. By all accounts, the new one is not good.

So, we’re nervous about the changes Starbucks is making to its strawberry acai refresher. Apparently, it’s now going to be caffeine-free by default, and so far, people aren’t happy. Here’s what we know.

Starbucks Strawberry Acai Refresher: Maybe…Less Refreshing?

Starting April 7, Starbucks is now making its Strawberry Acai Refresher with a different base, which doesn’t have green coffee extract in it. This will remove the caffeine from the standard drink – but you can add it back in by ordering one of Starbucks’ new Energy Refreshers. This new suite of drinks dropped the same day that it quietly changed the base of its Strawberry Acai Refresher, and includes various mango options. It’s also adding a mango cold foam to its menu, and a limited-time Iced Ube Coconut Cream Shaken Espresso (which does sound pretty good, to be fair to the chain).

Now, this might sound like a minor change – but it’s not as though Starbucks is just removing the caffeine and keeping everything else in. It’s removing the extract that has the caffeine in it, and that provides flavor and color, alongside an energy boost. The drink is now different, and its customers have noticed.

Listen To Your Fans, Starbucks – They’re Not Happy

The change in the chain’s Strawberry Acai Refresher was almost immediately picked up on by fans of the drink, who took to Reddit to question the change. One person who ordered the drink noted that it was an “unusually pale” color and that it tasted as though it had been watered down. People in the comment section promptly responded with serious dismay, with virtually everyone questioning and criticizing the decision to alter one of its most beloved drinks.

It wasn’t just customers that took issue, either. “Starbucks partner here, there was a new refresher launch today that’s absolutely garbage now,” said one comment. “We tried multiple ways to get the drinks to taste the way they did before so we could suggest something for customers but nothing is close unfortunately.”
Look, we don’t want to tell Starbucks how to do business, but…this feels like it may not end well. Yes, it might be grabbing headlines with moves like the return of its viral unicorn frappuccino, but we wonder whether it should be trying to retain its old favorites, too.
