Nowadays, people want to stay hydrated. They carry around their gargantuan Stanley mugs and they guzzle hydration drinks marketed by influencers—but that doesn’t mean they don’t still wanna catch a buzz every now and then. Alcohol is notoriously terrible for hydration (listen to a 43 year old: ALWAYS have a glass of water after you have a drink; drink > glass of water > drink > glass of water … repeat), but brands are finding ways to appeal to the pro-hydration crowd all the same. Last year we covered the release of Lightstrike, a so-called “hard refresher” that’s like a sports drink and boozy bev in one. And now the makers of Surfside hard teas and lemonades have their own boozy “ade” on the way.

I’m thirsty and I like to drink … what is it?

The new canned drink is called Super Lyte, and while it’s not exactly a boozy hydration drink, it’s a canned vodka drink that’s “inspired by” classic sports drinks (think: Powerade, Gatorade, and the like). Each can is 4.5 abv, zero sugar, 90 cals—and like Surfside, the new Super Lyte drinks are uncarbonated. Fewer burps!

Basically, if you’ve ever mixed Gatorade with vodka, this one’s for you! In fact, that was the inspiration. There’s no grape flavor yet (vodka and grape Gatorade was a classic where I come from), but the four current flavors are very sports drink-coded:

  • Super Lyte, Fruit Punch: A leveled-up remix on the popular fruit punch flavor, with a smooth finish that tastes both nostalgic and new.
  • Super Lyte, Orange: Bright and vibrant citrus flavor that provides a rush of refreshment, with a modern twist designed for easy sipping.
  • Super Lyte, Lemon Lime: Our twist on the deliciously tried-and-true lemon lime flavor delivers the perfect balance of sweet and tart.
  • Super Lyte, Blue Chill: Smooth, bold flavor meets an icy, cool finish.

When and where can we find Super Lyte?

Well, if you’re in California like we are, the bad news is, you might have to wait a minute for these to hit stores where you are. Super Lyte is initially launching in 20-plus states “along the East Coast and in the Midwest.” Those lucky folks will be able to find them pretty much everywhere: liquor stores, grocery stores, bars, restaurants, golf courses, sports stadiums, and music venues. As for when? Spring. No specifics, so you’ll just have to keep your eyes peeled in the coming months.

If all the flaves sound good to you, the good news is that you don’t have to choose: Super Lyte will be sold in variety 8-packs with two of each flavor. Great news if they’re all good!

Gwynedd Stuart

Howdy! I’m Gwynedd, Sporked’s managing editor. I live in Los Angeles and have access to the best tacos the U.S. has to offer—but I’m a sucker for a crunchy Old El Paso taco night every now and then. I’ve been at Sporked since 2022 and I’m still searching frozen mozzarella sticks that can hold a candle to restaurant sticks. Why you should trust me: I’ve been a journalist for 20 years (yikes), a consumer of food for 40-plus years, and I’m truly hard pressed to think of foods I don’t like (or that I can’t tolerate at the very least). Oh and one time I cooked my way through Guy Fieri’s cookbook and wrote about the journey through Flavortown. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s Original Savory Thins. Fat free plain yogurt (usually Fage or Nancy’s). Honeycrisp apples. Sweet cream coffee creamer for my at-home Americanos. A frozen cauliflower crust pizza and some jarred mushrooms to top it with. Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells and Gardein Ground Be’f, even though I think “be’f” is a nightmarish contraction. Favorite ranking: Stouffer’s frozen dinners. I don’t own a microwave (I get my cancers the old fashioned way!), so I love taste testing things that I don’t really buy to eat at home. Least favorite ranking: Soy sauce. Don’t get me wrong, I love soy sauce—but consuming that much sodium in one sitting is probably illegal in some countries. Our frozen enchilada taste test was a close second; the smell of microwaved corn tortillas still haunts me.
