I love a dessert that has savory qualities. A cheese board with hot honey and fruit. Lemon olive oil cake. A doughnut with bacon on it. So naturally, when I heard Van Leeuwen was releasing a line of savory ice creams, I was first in line to try them.
The two new flavors taking the ice cream world by storm are Pizza and Kraft Macaroni & Cheese. While I wanted to love or hate these ice creams, I, sadly, just ended up feeling a little bored.

If you’re promising me pizza, I want pizza. I want tomato and basil and cheese—maybe even a little pepperoni or onion! Unfortunately, this pint lacks any pizza punch whatsoever. That being said, it is a tasty ice cream. The tomato is sparse but has a nice sweet and jammy quality. The chunks integrated into the base are good, even though they taste more like sugar cookie dough than pizza dough. In my opinion, this is a very mild strawberry cheesecake ice cream and not a pizza ice cream. I’m not sure why you would buy this; it certainly isn’t bad. It’s just not pizza.

The Kraft Macaroni & Cheese ice cream has such a smooth and luscious texture. I would describe the flavor, however, as vanilla ice cream featuring a light cheese powder finish. I wanted a cheesier flavor throughout and, maybe this is too wild for some, but I want noodles! This has no “mac” and I definitely found myself missing it. Plus, if you’re pushing a savory ice cream, make it savory!
