Listen. I don’t make the rules. But it is absolutely true that sometimes you need a snack, and that snack involves stumbling into the kitchen at 2 a.m. and making yourself a cold, delightfully pillowy tortilla-cream cheese rollup. But it is also true that you are an adult, and sometimes you feel like you have to make responsible life choices. And therefore you may be wondering if there is a tortilla out there that gives you all that lovely, pillowy-soft tortilla texture with just a touch fewer carbs. That’s why we set out to find the best low carb tortillas.

What counts as a “low carb” tortilla anyway?

There’s no hard-and-fast rule about what constitutes a low carb food, but for comparison’s sake, a single burrito-sized Mission flour tortilla contains 35g of carbs. That’s a lot! While some of the low carb tortillas we tried have almost as many carbs listed on their labels, they also contain enough protein to bring down the net carb count.

What we were looking for in the best low carb tortillas

The best low-carb tortillas are soft, pliable (not brittle), don’t taste like alternative sweeteners, and they actually taste like tortillas. Not all of the low carb tortillas we tried achieved those qualifications. So, whether you are here because you are a gym bro, trying a keto diet, or just plain curious about all things round and floury, let’s taco ’bout the best tasting low carb tortillas.

Best Gluten Free Low Carb Tortillas

Maria & Ricardo’s Carb Bueno Gluten Free Tortillas (8.5g carbs)

I have to level with you: The texture of this low carb tortilla is strange. It is a bit gritty and brittle. “But Jessica, why then, pray tell, did you still put it on the list?” Great question! Basically, it tastes good. I would liken its flavor to a cross between a whole wheat tortilla and a savory oatmeal cookie. All that is to say, if you are a gluten free person looking to make a low carb quesadilla, this will get the job done without tasting like cardboard or chemicals.

Most Interesting Flavor

Mission Zero Net Carbs Original Street Tortillas (7g carbs, 0g net carbs)

This might sound cuckoo bananas, but Mission’s zero carb tortillas actually taste noticeably different than their Carb Balance tortillas, which have 2 net carbs versus 0 net carbs. The ingredients are pretty similar, but for some reason, these bad boys taste a little like cumin, even though it isn’t in the ingredient list. They have that earthy, dusky tang cumin tends to have (think of the flavor of a big pot of chili), plus they have a nice texture for no carb tortillas. These will make very acceptable tacos!

Best Plain Low Carb Tortillas

Mission Carb Balance Flour (19g carbs, 2g net carbs)

These low carb Mission tortillas are more neutral tasting than their zero carb counterparts. They’re sweet, soft, fluffy, and overall taste like a normal Mission tortilla but slightly sweeter. I will say, if you are very sensitive to the taste of stevia, you may detect it in this tortilla. A lot of low carb tortillas contain stevia, but be forewarned that it’s a bit more detectable in these Carb Balance boys.

Best Low Carb Tortillas for Street Tacos

Guerrero Zero Net Carbs Original High Fiber Street Taco (7g carbs, 0g net carbs)

Guerrero’s street taco-sized tortillas have a slightly strange flavor…but we kind of liked it? Believe it or not, these plain, low carb Guerrero flour tortillas kind of taste like coffee (instant coffee, specifically). At first, I thought, “No, that’s weird for a tortilla,” but then I kept coming back for bites because coffee isn’t really an off flavor, per se, it’s just interesting, and, as we eventually decided, good. These would be great with some really saucy, smoky tacos or enchiladas drenched in mole.

Best Whole Wheat Low Carb Tortillas

Mission Carb Balance Whole Wheat (33g carbs, 3g net carbs)

If you want a neutral-tasting low carb tortilla with no off or out-of-place flavors and no detectable hint of stevia (even though it’s in there), this is the best low carb tortilla to pick up. Mission Carb Balance whole wheat tortillas are more savory than the non-whole wheat ones, and these, really and truly, taste like normal whole wheat tortillas. If you are looking for a blank slate of a tortilla, buy this. You will not be disappointed. (I even gave these the cream cheese and lunch meat rollup test and it passed; and I’m sure they would pass the PB&J test, too).

Best of the Best

Guerrero Zero Net Carbs Chipotle High Fiber Street Taco (7g carbs, 0g net carbs)

Guerrero’s no carb chipotle tortillas taste great, and when low carb tortilla tastes so good that you would eat them of your own free will, undoctored, unsauced, and uncheesed, you know they gotta be the best low carb tortillas of them all (ahem, make that the best no carb tortillas of them all). These little street taco-sized tortillas pack a big punch of smoky chipotle flavor that reminded us of chipotles in adobo. These are umami, earthy, and lightly spicy, and would make an absolutely bonkers quesadilla (or cream cheese rollup). If you happen upon these in the store and are in need of some low-carb tortillas, you should get them…not sure I would do the PB&J test with these, though.
