When it comes to breakfast cereal, peanut butter isn’t nearly as well represented as, say, chocolate or fruit in the cereal aisle. And that’s a shame because, a. Peanut butter is a much more traditional breakfast food than chocolate (for better or worse), and b. Peanut butter cereal tastes so good. My personal favorite is Nature’s Path Organic’s Peanut Butter Panda Puffs, but that might only be because I never had the opportunity to try Peanut Butter Toast Crunch. That’s about to change, because this bygone, fan-favorite cereal is heading back to shelves in January 2026.

What’s Peanut Butter Toast Crunch and why haven’t I ever heard of it?

According to The_Cerealqueen on Instagram, Peanut Butter Toast Crunch first debuted in 2004 and hung around for a handful of years. It returned to shelves in 2012, but vanished once again in 2014. To be perfectly honest, I’m not sure how I missed it the first time around. I was in college! College students love cereal! Gonna chalk this one up to being busy.

Does Peanut Butter Toast Crunch still involve cinnamon? Because that sounds kinda weird.

In its original form, no, Peanut Butter Toast Crunch didn’t have cinnamon in the mix. Here’s how The_Cerealqueen describes it: “It took the iconic rice and wheat based squares, but instead of a dusting of cinnamon they were formulated with real peanut butter right into the batter before baked into cereal squares.”

But here’s where things get tricky: Images of the version heading to stores in January indicate that things could be different this time around. For one thing, the cereal is no longer called Peanut Butter Toast Crunch; instead, it’s called Cinnamon Toast Crunch Peanut Butter. Does that mean this new version WILL have cinnamon in the mix? Well, the description on the box simply says “sweetened whole wheat & rice cereal with peanut butter”—no mention of cinnamon on the squares. BUT the imagery still shows those cinnamon-y little swirls on the cereal pieces, which, along with the name, sure makes it seem like this cereal involves cinnamon.

If you’re dubious that peanut butter and cinnamon go together, listen—I am, too. But it’s a thing! M&M’s recently teased its 2026 “bakery-inspired” flavor lineup, and it includes a Peanut Butter Cinnamon Roll flavor. We got an early taste of the new M&M’s and, I have to admit, it kinda works.

Either way, we can’t wait to have another peanut butter cereal in our lives.

Howdy! I’m Gwynedd, Sporked’s managing editor. I live in Los Angeles and have access to the best tacos the U.S. has to offer—but I’m a sucker for a crunchy Old El Paso taco night every now and then. I’ve been at Sporked since 2022 and I’m still searching frozen mozzarella sticks that can hold a candle to restaurant sticks. Why you should trust me: I’ve been a journalist for 20 years (yikes), a consumer of food for 40-plus years, and I’m truly hard pressed to think of foods I don’t like (or that I can’t tolerate at the very least). Oh and one time I cooked my way through Guy Fieri’s cookbook and wrote about the journey through Flavortown. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s Original Savory Thins. Fat free plain yogurt (usually Fage or Nancy’s). Honeycrisp apples. Sweet cream coffee creamer for my at-home Americanos. A frozen cauliflower crust pizza and some jarred mushrooms to top it with. Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells and Gardein Ground Be’f, even though I think “be’f” is a nightmarish contraction. Favorite ranking: Stouffer’s frozen dinners. I don’t own a microwave (I get my cancers the old fashioned way!), so I love taste testing things that I don’t really buy to eat at home. Least favorite ranking: Soy sauce. Don’t get me wrong, I love soy sauce—but consuming that much sodium in one sitting is probably illegal in some countries. Our frozen enchilada taste test was a close second; the smell of microwaved corn tortillas still haunts me.
