If you live in a pineapple under the sea and you wake up hungry, chances are you’re reaching for a box of Kelpo cereal. The yellow box, with its bug-eyed, anthropomorphic seaweed sprout, has appeared in lots of episodes of Spongebob Squarepants over the years (more than 20, according to eagle-eyed viewers). Up here on land, we’ve had to settle for much more mundane options—but finally, thanks to Kellogg’s, there’s a bowl of Kelpo in your future. The new Spongebob cereal has already been spotted in Walmart stores.
Spongebob cereal sounds familiar…this isn’t the first Spongebob cereal, is it?
C’man…you think a children’s TV show could be on the air for more than 20 years and not have had a brand tie-in breakfast cereal by now? According to a very helpful wiki on the subject, the first Spongebob cereal was released in 2004, which also happens to be the year the first Spongebob movie was released. In fact, Spongebob cereal seems to reemerge every time a Spongebob movie comes out (and a new one is about to come out in December), but it’s usually some version of a sweetened corn or wheat cereal with marshmallows. This is the first time we’re getting a Spongebob cereal from the world of the show—and that’s pretty fun, right?
Will eating Kelpo for breakfast result in a yellow, angular, porous physique?
We can’t make any promises, but probably not given that this new Spongebob cereal looks a lot like Kix—and as far as we know Kix have never had that effect on anyone. The box describes it as a “sweetened corn cereal”—pretty standard stuff in the cereal aisle, but the box is really fun. So far, Kelpo has been spotted at Walmart and it’s limited edition, so grab a box while you can.
