Finding good fruit and vegetables shouldn’t be that hard, after all, it literally grows on trees. And yet, and yet, it really is. The quality of fresh produce at large grocery stores can be inconsistent at best, and downright awful at worst, with your tomatoes, oranges, and cucumbers shriveling and wilting within minutes of getting them home (okay, not that quickly, but you know what we mean). Throw in a generally dull flavor and questionable farming practices, and it all makes for an ugly picture. No wonder so many people opt for canned or frozen fruit instead.
Don’t lose hope just yet, guys. There’s some great fruit and veg out there, as long as you know where to shop. Luckily, Food & Wine recently analyzed all manner of qualifications, including how grocery stores source their produce, their sustainability practices, and they looked at customer reviews, and came up with a list of the five best grocery chains with reliably excellent produce sections. Here’s what they found.
Sprouts Farmers Market
As a grocery store that’s made its name by offering a farmers market experience, it’s probably no surprise that Sprouts Farmers Market has great produce. Its fruit and veg selection is extensive, fresh, and well-sourced, with a good percentage of its best products coming from a network of local growers. The brand puts an emphasis on regional and seasonal items. It’s also got a wide range of organic produce, and its quality is generally regarded as great by customers.
Wegmans
Wegmans knows the importance of keeping it local. The East Coast grocery store works with roughly 400 local farms and suppliers to source its produce, which only has to travel a short distance to get to its locations, guaranteeing freshness and vibrancy upon arrival. That being said, it doesn’t limit the selection available to its customers: Wegmans offers a wide variety of fruit and veg, both seasonally and year-round, and its items are renowned for being well worth the cost.
The Fresh Market
The Fresh Market doesn’t mess around when it comes to produce (and with the name like that, you’d hope not, right?). The Southeastern U.S. chain specializes in selling locally-grown fruit and vegetables sourced directly from farmers, and has an extensive selection of unique produce that you might not find in your local Walmart. The quality of its produce is such that in 2025, it was awarded the top spot in USA Today’s 10Best Awards for Best Grocery Store for Produce (while also gaining awards for having the best deli, bakery, and being the best grocery store overall).
Natural Grocers
It can be hard to find quality organic produce that doesn’t cost a pretty penny, but Natural Grocers manages to fill that gap pretty well. This grocery store, which specializes in selling 100% certified organic fruit and vegetables, is well-regarded by customers and industry folks alike for its excellent produce, as well as the extent of its offerings. It definitely has an image of being slightly more upmarket than other grocers, but that doesn’t mean that it’s wildly expensive: Some shoppers have noted that it’s cheaper than the likes of Whole Foods and Sprouts Farmers Market, while still offering fantastic quality.
