I don’t know about you but I’m having a bit of a holiday spending hangover. The wallet faucet has been turned off. So, it’s to Dollar General I go, because even though I’m done spending with reckless abandon, it doesn’t mean I don’t still need to buy food—and that includes a treat or two.

I combed Dollar General’s Dollar Deals (some of which are a dollar, some are just over) and found the five best, Sporked approved deals available right now. Here’s what to add to your next Dollar General haul.

Banquet Frozen Turkey Pot Pie ($1.00)

This is the best frozen turkey pot pie we tried. It’s chock full of savory gravy and just enough chunks of dark meat turkey to actually convince you that you’re getting some protein. It doesn’t look particularly appetizing, but the flavor is incredible.

Del Monte Fresh Cut Whole Kernel Corn ($1.25)

I led our most recent canned corn taste test (I lead a glamorous life here at Sporked) and found that Del Monte makes the best canned corn. The kernels are crunchy and crisp. The flavor is anything but bland—sweet, buttery, savory. It’s so good you can totally just eat it out of a can and call that lunch.

Mahatma Yellow Rice ($1.00)

We tried a bunch of other brands of yellow rice but Mahatma took the title of best yellow rice. The grains are long and fluffy and the mix of spices (which includes turmeric and saffron) is balanced and tasty. Pro tip: Make this rice with chicken broth for a super satisfying side.

Tiny Tate’s Itsy Bitsy Crispy Cookies ($1.00)

Tate’s makes the best chocolate chip cookies you can buy at the grocery store. We’ve tried brand after brand and that keeps being the case. If you can’t buy a 7oz bag without finishing it in one sitting—we’re right there with you—then this 1oz bag is a great solution. Grab a few bags and stash them anywhere that a cookie craving might hit: the car, your desk drawer, the medicine cabinet in the bathroom, etc.

Haribo Unicornliscious ($1.00)

Okay, so we haven’t tasted these new Haribo gummy candies yet, but for a dollar, it’s worth the risk. And we really haven’t had a bad Haribo gummy candy yet. These brightly colorful unicorn gummies are cute as heck and we’ll be trying them ASAP.

About the Author

Justine Sterling

Hi! I’m the editor-in-chief of Sporked. I will never turn down a fresh-shucked oyster but I’ll also leap at whatever new product Reese’s releases and I love a Tostitos Hint of Lime, even if there is no actual lime in the ingredients. Why you should trust me: I have been writing about food and beverages for well over a decade and am an avid at-home cook and snacker. I began my career writing about fine dining and recipes, moved into cocktails and spirits, and now I talk about groceries. If you can eat it or drink it, I’ve probably written about it. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s dried okra. Appleton Farms prosciutto from Aldi. Some sort of Trader Joe’s cheese (I’m into the aged gouda at the moment). Frozen waffles (usually the Eggo Cinnamon Toast Minis). Spindrift water (loving the Cosmopolitan right now). Favorite ranking: Smoked salmon. Imagine me as Scrooge McDuck but instead of coins I’m diving into a vault of slippery smoked salmon slices. Pure joy. I also found some real steals in that taste test! Least favorite ranking: Canned oysters. I had such high hopes for this but it quickly became a chore. The kitchen smelled like an uncleaned aquarium.
