Food and drink recalls can be initiated for all sorts of reasons, from potential bacterial contamination (as in the recent Boar’s Head cheese recall) to foreign objects getting into the food in question and posing choking or health hazards. Another key reason for their occurrence, though, is mislabeling. Foods that leave the production line labeled as one thing but containing another are a pretty frequent occurrence, and can result in customers ending up with and consuming the wrong thing.
Well, that’s happened once more. This time Keurig K-Cups are being recalled. The reason? The decaf coffee pods may actually contain caffeine. Here’s what we know.
Almost 1,000 McCafe K-Cups Could Be Mislabeled
The recall notice, which was voluntarily issued by Keurig Dr Pepper and published by the FDA, is for 960 cartons of McCafe Premium Roast Decaf Coffee K-Cup Pods, each containing 84 individual coffee pods (meaning that, in total, over 80,000 pods have been affected). The recall was initiated when the firm discovered that the decaf coffee pods may have caffeinated coffee inside them back in December 2025. In the last few days, though, the recall has received a Class II classification from the FDA.
Class II recalls, according to the organization, are those “in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.” For most people, consuming the caffeinated coffee won’t have significant side effects (but it’s naturally not what you want from your cup of Joe, and may well disrupt your sleep or produce jitteriness), but it could have a more profound effect on individuals with caffeine sensitivity or who are breastfeeding.
Where Are the Affected K-Cups?
The mislabeled K-Cups had been distributed to three states: California, Indiana, and Nevada. People who suspect that their K-Cups might be part of the affected batch should look for the following information on their product:
- Best by: 17 Nov 2026
- Batch number: 5101564894
- Material Number: 5000358463
- UPC: 043000073438
- ASIN: B07GCNDL91
At present, the affected batch seems to be an isolated incident, with no other best-by dates or batch numbers involved. And, per Keurig Dr Pepper, “In cooperation with the FDA, in mid-December, we initiated a voluntary recall of a limited number of 84-count boxes of McCafe Premium Roast Decaf coffee K-Cup pods, sold exclusively through Amazon. All consumers who purchased this product were notified directly in mid-December, and all product was removed from sale at that time. We are committed to the highest standards of safety and quality in the products we produce and distribute.”
