Major respect to Cutwater, a true pioneer of canned cocktails. They were one of the first companies to make real canned cocktails with real spirits. And I have to commend them for continuing to innovate—even if that means discontinuing my favorite canned Gin & Tonic in favor of a new Gin Soda (it still ranked pretty high up in our ranking of the Cutwater flavor, but it’s no G&T). Case in point: The brand just released a new take on an Espresso Martini. Behold, the Chocolate Espresso Martini.
Now available in four packs wherever Cutwater is sold, this new drink is a creamy take on an Espresso Martini made with Cutwater vodka and coffee cream liqueur, infused with chocolate flavors. Interesting idea but is it any good? We tried it to find out.
Pros: This tastes like alcoholic chocolate milk—in a good way. Think of, like, chocolate milk made with Hershey’s syrup and 2% milk. Then add a punch of alcohol. That’s kind of the experience. It’s sweet and cozy and genuinely chocolatey. It’s an easy sipper…if you like sweet stuff.
Cons: If you’re looking for anything close to a classic Espresso Martini, this won’t satiate your craving. It doesn’t have that punch of espresso, plus it’s creamy. And it might be a bit too sweet for some (my husband, for one, who gave me the rest of his glass to drink, which I gladly did).
Verdict: This is a tasty, boozy treat. It’d be a great nightcap in place of dessert or a fun brunch cocktail as well (though I might toss in some cold brew to up the coffee flavor a bit more). All in all a good addition to the Cutwater line-up.
Hi! I’m the editor-in-chief of Sporked. I will never turn down a fresh-shucked oyster but I’ll also leap at whatever new product Reese’s releases and I love a Tostitos Hint of Lime, even if there is no actual lime in the ingredients.
Why you should trust me: I have been writing about food and beverages for well over a decade and am an avid at-home cook and snacker. I began my career writing about fine dining and recipes, moved into cocktails and spirits, and now I talk about groceries. If you can eat it or drink it, I’ve probably written about it.
What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s dried okra. Appleton Farms prosciutto from Aldi. Some sort of Trader Joe’s cheese (I’m into the aged gouda at the moment). Frozen waffles (usually the Eggo Cinnamon Toast Minis). Spindrift water (loving the Cosmopolitan right now).
Favorite ranking: Smoked salmon. Imagine me as Scrooge McDuck but instead of coins I’m diving into a vault of slippery smoked salmon slices. Pure joy. I also found some real steals in that taste test!
Least favorite ranking: Canned oysters. I had such high hopes for this but it quickly became a chore. The kitchen smelled like an uncleaned aquarium.
