Trader Joe’s Is Discontinuing a Fan-Favorite Cheese

It’s a sad day for Trader Joe’s fans: the Everything but the Bagel Cheddar Cheese is going away.

How do we even know it’s being discontinued?

The non-TJ affiliated Instagram account Trader Joe’s Treasure Hunt broke the news with a photo from a store that featured the fan-favorite cheese with a label that read, “To be discontinued. Get it while you can!” In the comments, many were understandably confused and distraught, asking why TJ’s would discontinue such a beloved item. 

Why do people care about this Trader Joe’s cheese?

While TJ’s has a variety of great cheeses, this one was particularly special. The 8-oz block of cheddar, made with the Everything But the Bagel Sesame Seasoning Blend, has become a go-to for charcuterie boards, sandwiches, and mac and cheese. It also makes an excellent snack on its own. Since its 2024 launch, this cheese has been one of my must-buy items in the cheese aisle, as it packs a flavorful punch. People consider the cheddar’s tanginess, paired with garlic and onion, to be irresistible, especially when melted.

Why is Trader Joe’s discontinuing this cheese?

When I asked a friend who used to work at TJ’s why they would discontinue such a well-liked product, he said it might be due to distribution changes or to encourage shoppers to try other products that haven’t sold as well. And it’s hardly the only fan-favorite item that has gone away at the grocery chain. This includes the Ricotta & Lemon Zest Ravioli, Spicy Hummus Dip, Chili Sesame Oil, Herbed Tahini Sauce, and Corn Poblano Chowder.

Thankfully, Trader Joe’s offers other excellent cheeses worth trying, such as the Cheddar Cheese with Caramelized Onions (my personal favorite for grilled cheese sandwiches), the Cheddar Cheese with Scotch Bonnet Chili Peppers, and the Toscano Cheese with Black Pepper.
