We need more people in the world like cousins Jason McGowan and Sawyer Hemsley. All they wanted to do was make the perfect chocolate chip cookie. Did they happen to stumble upon a $2 billion business in the process? Sure! But it all started with the pure of heart desire to make a really great cookie.

Did they succeed? My colleagues and I sat down to an array of Crumbl’s classic flavors as well as the Crumbl cookies of the week from the week of our taste test to find out—and to determine the best Crumbl cookie of them all.

Before we get into all that though, let’s briefly talk about what Crumbl is for those who aren’t familiar. Here’s an easy way to understand it if you’re a ‘90s kid: Imagine if Mrs. Fields got out of the mall, got a degree in graphic design, and started her own brick-and-mortar business. Crumbl is a national chain of cookie shops. They sell big cookies (one cookie can easily serve two people) in a variety of flavors and temperatures (chilled or warm). There are the classics and there are also weekly specials. Sometimes they branch out and offer non-cookie specials, like brownies or cake slices. And people love them. With that out of the way, let’s get to it.

What we look for in the best Crumbl cookie flavors:

  • Balanced flavor. Yes, cookies are sweet. They’re desserts. But the best cookies have just a little bit of salt to balance out that sweetness and keep you coming back for more.
  • Good texture. Ironically, we don’t actually want a crumbly cookie. We want that perfect mix of crispy edges and chewy interior. Or, at the very least, we don’t want something that dries out our mouths and has us reaching for the milk.
  • A little something unexpected. While the cousins may have been trying to make the best chocolate chip cookie, Crumbl has evolved into a place that spits out wild, never-before-seen cookie creations. Ergo, the best Crumbl flavors should be a little something out of the ordinary in some way shape or form.

Here are all the Crumbl cookies ranked—check back for updates as we taste more and more Crumbl cookies of the week.

Cinnamon Square

Cinnamon Square (weekly special)

Here’s an example of Crumbl going a little too far afield. This isn’t a cookie at all. It’s a cinnamon roll, but square. And it’s not a particularly great cinnamon roll. It’s on the dry side (needs more of that cinnamon goo in the layers) and there’s not enough cinnamon flavor in general.

Pink Sugar Cookie

Pink Sugar Cookie (classic)

Those big, pale, heavily iced, floury cookies you get at the grocery store are polarizing. You either love them or hate them. I have a soft spot for them. And I expected this to be a better version of that kind of cookie. However, the cookie itself is far too sandy and the frosting is way, way, way too almond extract-y. It’s an easy fix.

Sea Salt Toffee

Sea Salt Toffee

Sea Salt Toffee (weekly special)

If you put the words “sea salt” in the name of the cookie then I’m gonna need to see some big ol’ flakes. Had there been some crunchy sea salt flakes, I think this would have been a real hit. It has a good texture, the toffee and milk chocolate chips are smooth and tasty. But it ends up being one note without that hit of salt.

Celebration cookie

Celebration

Celebration (classic)

A cake batter cookie with cake batter frosting, this indulgent cookie might be the best Crumbl cookie if you’re really fiending for a sugar fix. The frosting is sweet, as it should be. The cookie manages to taste like cake batter but maintains the texture of a doughy cookie. While it’s not my personal pick, I’m pretty sure my five-year-old would lose his dang mind.

Crumbl Cookies & Cream Cookie

Cookies & Cream

Cookies & Cream (classic)

This Crumbl cookie flavor is what I wish Oreo Cakesters tasted like. The base cookie tastes like a thick, soft Oreo—it has a deep chocolate flavor. And the frosting on top is rich and sweet and more vanilla-y than classic Oreo creme. That was a negative for some Sporked taste testers, but others appreciated that quality. If you dream of artisanal Oreo Cakesters, this is the best Crumbl cookie flavor to add to your order.

Crumbl Chocolate Chunk cookie

Chocolate Chunk

Chocolate Chunk (classic)

This is it. This is that “perfect” chocolate chip cookie those now billionaire cousins were striving to create. Is it truly perfect? That’s so tough, because it’s not my perfect chocolate chip cookie. I prefer my chocolate chip cookies to be doughier and chewier. This one is definitely cooked all the way through, but it’s still tender, don’t get me wrong. And there is SO. Much. Chocolate. Lots and lots of chocolate chunks in every bite. It’s a damn good chocolate chip cookie—but you are going to need a milk chaser.

Crumbl Galaxy Brownie cookie

Galaxy Brownie

Galaxy Brownie (weekly special)

I know this looks like Crumbl’s take on a Little Debbie’s Cosmic Brownie. I mean, it totally is. But it’s also way better than a Cosmic Brownie (it also costs more, so it darn well should taste better). Anyway, the cookie has a deep, rich cocoa flavor. It’s not super sweet at all. It’s probably the least sweet of all the Crumbl flavors we tried. It’s tender and soft and topped with some firm chocolate icing that’s studded with little candy-coated chocolate pebbles, which add some crunch. It’s a really good cookie—though it’s not the absolute best Crumbl cookie of the chocolate variety.

Crumbl Strawberry Biscoff

Strawberry Biscoff

Strawberry Biscoff (weekly special)

This was just a weekly special, but it really should become a permanent fixture amongst all the Crumbl cookie flavors. It’s a Biscoff flavored cookie (that means it’s a cookie flavored cookie) and it’s topped with strawberry cream cheese frosting, which is blended with real jam. It’s such an unexpectedly incredible combo. The cookie tastes like a thick, doughy Biscoff cookie. And the frosting tastes like super fresh strawberry—no artificial strawberry here. We could not stop eating this cookie. Make it a full-time flavor, Crumbl!

Crumbl Snickerdoodle

Snickerdoodle

Snickerdoodle (classic)

While Crumbl’s snickerdoodle doesn’t necessarily taste like the most snickerdoodly snickerdoodle (it’s somewhat lacking in the cinnamon and cream of tartar department), it does taste like one of the best sugar cookies I’ve ever had. It tastes like you’re eating raw sugar cookie dough in the best way possible. If you were always the kid waiting to lick the bowl when a parent made cookies, this is the best Crumbl flavor to snag.

Crumbl Brownie Batter cookie

Brownie Batter

Brownie Batter (classic)

This is the perfect chocolate cookie. Even if you don’t like chocolate cookies, you’ll like this cookie. It tastes just like the inner square of a tray of brownies—slightly underdone, gooey, rich, chocolaty. And it has a wonderful, slick, crisp outside. It’s moist as all get out. I never crave chocolate cookies, but out of all the Crumbl cookie flavors we tried, this is the one I’ve been thinking about the most. If you’re grabbing a selection of Crumbl cookies, make sure you include a couple of these, because you’re going to want a whole one for yourself.

About the Author

Justine Sterling

Hi! I’m the editor-in-chief of Sporked. I will never turn down a fresh-shucked oyster but I’ll also leap at whatever new product Reese’s releases and I love a Tostitos Hint of Lime, even if there is no actual lime in the ingredients. Why you should trust me: I have been writing about food and beverages for well over a decade and am an avid at-home cook and snacker. I began my career writing about fine dining and recipes, moved into cocktails and spirits, and now I talk about groceries. If you can eat it or drink it, I’ve probably written about it. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s dried okra. Appleton Farms prosciutto from Aldi. Some sort of Trader Joe’s cheese (I’m into the aged gouda at the moment). Frozen waffles (usually the Eggo Cinnamon Toast Minis). Spindrift water (loving the Cosmopolitan right now). Favorite ranking: Smoked salmon. Imagine me as Scrooge McDuck but instead of coins I’m diving into a vault of slippery smoked salmon slices. Pure joy. I also found some real steals in that taste test! Least favorite ranking: Canned oysters. I had such high hopes for this but it quickly became a chore. The kitchen smelled like an uncleaned aquarium.
