One of the best things about being a 20-something in the South? Twenty-four-seven Waffle House access. You can have Cheese & Eggs with Raisin Toast at 2:30 a.m. or smothered-covered hash browns when the sun is actually up, all while listening to a medley of breakfast food-themed tunes on the ol’ jukebox (“Last Night I Saw Elvis at the Waffle House” is a personal favorite).

If you live in a region where those iconic yellow-and-black signs don’t shine like beacons in the night at every other freeway exit, you are apparently one step closer to getting the Waffle House experience wherever you are. Waffle House has a product coming to stores—but it’s probably not what you’re expecting.

Okay, so what is Waffle House selling?

According to the Instagram food news account Snackwire, Waffle House Cold Brew in a can is among a bunch of new coffees and teas heading to stores soon. Nope, not bags of frozen hash browns (seriously, what are you waiting for?) or loaves of raisin bread (c’mon, guys)—Waffle House coffee in a can.

It’s not a “new” product, per se. Last June, the canned coffee bev—which is spiked with sweet cream—launched at a bunch of Waffle House locations in the Atlanta area. Snackwire wasn’t specific about where these Waffle House Cold Brew cans will be available, but all of the products in their post should be at grocery stores, convenience stores, or online in the near future.

Important question: Is Waffle House coffee … good?

I have surely guzzled gallons of Waffle House coffee during my 43 years on planet Earth, and I honestly couldn’t tell you. It’s like a lot of diner coffee—wholly unremarkable in what I suppose is a comforting way, although another Southerner on our team described it as tasting like battery acid.

So, what did people have to say about this canned cold brew when it first launched in Atlanta? The buzz on Reddit is that it’s sweet—really sweet, but that’s sort of what you expect from canned coffee drinks, right? According to one commenter, there are 29g of sugar in an 11oz can, so, to be fair, that’s a decent amount less than the 47g in a 13oz bottled Frappucino.

If canned coffee isn’t what you’re looking for from Waffle House, don’t fret: They already sell bags of ground coffee, plus their syrup and waffle mix online. Still waiting for the hash browns, though.

Howdy! I’m Gwynedd, Sporked’s managing editor. I live in Los Angeles and have access to the best tacos the U.S. has to offer—but I’m a sucker for a crunchy Old El Paso taco night every now and then. I’ve been at Sporked since 2022 and I’m still searching frozen mozzarella sticks that can hold a candle to restaurant sticks. Why you should trust me: I’ve been a journalist for 20 years (yikes), a consumer of food for 40-plus years, and I’m truly hard pressed to think of foods I don’t like (or that I can’t tolerate at the very least). Oh and one time I cooked my way through Guy Fieri’s cookbook and wrote about the journey through Flavortown. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s Original Savory Thins. Fat free plain yogurt (usually Fage or Nancy’s). Honeycrisp apples. Sweet cream coffee creamer for my at-home Americanos. A frozen cauliflower crust pizza and some jarred mushrooms to top it with. Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells and Gardein Ground Be’f, even though I think “be’f” is a nightmarish contraction. Favorite ranking: Stouffer’s frozen dinners. I don’t own a microwave (I get my cancers the old fashioned way!), so I love taste testing things that I don’t really buy to eat at home. Least favorite ranking: Soy sauce. Don’t get me wrong, I love soy sauce—but consuming that much sodium in one sitting is probably illegal in some countries. Our frozen enchilada taste test was a close second; the smell of microwaved corn tortillas still haunts me.
