We’re all about viral food trends. Seriously – we know that sometimes they can be a bit stupid, or completely impractical, but we just love seeing what’s setting the internet alight day in, day out. Dumpling lasagna. Salt bread. Frozen gummy candy. Fruit bucket ice cream. And honestly, these are all just in the last few weeks: Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen more of them than we can count, and we’ve tried most of them.

You know which one we’re not trying, though? The viral TikTok egg hack, which is, frankly, incredibly dangerous. Let’s avoid this one, kiddos.
What Is The Viral TikTok Egg Hack?
This egg hack, which is currently setting social media alight, definitely looks cute. You start by putting raw eggs in the freezer until they’re completely solid. Then, peel your eggs, slice them into rounds before they thaw, and fry said rounds individually. The result is a bunch of mini fried eggs that, as is the main currency of TikTok and Instagram, look very cute. We do admit that they’d be just darling on your kids’ plates, and you can eat each one individually, cutting down on the mess normally associated with fried eggs.
This hack first appeared a couple of years back, when it gained some serious traction. Now, it’s rearing its head again – maybe because egg prices are down again, which is making buying them waaaay more attractive – and while it may not have got the numbers that it once did, we’re kinda glad about it.
And Why Are You Glad About It?
Because doing this is not wise, guys. As the USDA states, “Shell eggs should not be frozen. If an egg accidentally freezes and the shell cracked during freezing, discard the egg.” The shell will probably crack if you do this, because as the egg white freezes, it expands, rupturing the outside. And that’s an issue because it allows Salmonella bacteria to enter the egg, and those bacteria can come from all manner of places.
Now, you may be able to safely kill off any Salmonella bacteria by cooking the eggs thoroughly, but the whole point of these very attractive-looking mini eggs is that they have an oozing, gooey egg yolk. So…by TikTok standards, you’re not really meant to cook them that well, leaving a greater risk of the food remaining contaminated. To be honest, we don’t really want to take the risk on that one; we’d rather just make a normal fried egg and remain safe in the knowledge that it’s totally safe to eat. Not all trends have to be attempted, and not all influencers have to have influence on your cooking habits. If you see one of these videos, just scroll on by.
