Habiza hummus purports to be the “world’s creamiest hummus.” A bold claim—and a highly effective one, too. The first time I came across Habiza, I was shopping for our most recent hummus taste test, scoping out new, weird flavors and brands we hadn’t tried before. Personally, there’s absolutely no chance I can see the words “world’s creamiest hummus” on a label and leave the container on the shelf. Not happening! Very savvy, Habiza! The good news is that Habiza is great—it bumped a bunch of other brands and swiftly became our #2 favorite. And the better news is that Habiza is about to be a lot more available in a lot more places.

What’s Habiza and who makes it?

Habiza has a good brand story. Jonathan Srour, a Gen Z college dropout, turned his parents’ L.A. garage into a makeshift factory and started churning out hummus made according to his Lebanese great grandma’s recipe. It quickly became the top-selling hummus at Erewhon and that’s when Food Beast Ventures took notice. The media brand’s investment arm purchased a stake in the company and now a major expansion is underway. Soon, Habiza will be on shelves at Target stores up and down the West Coast, as well as certain Albertsons-owned grocery chains. (I shop at an Albertsons-owned grocery store and the hummus selection stinks, so this is exciting for me.)

What makes Habiza taste good?

Well, it really is creamy as hell. That’s a good start. We also love its bold tahini flavor. Hell, I’ll just give you an excerpt from my review: “We love Holy Hummus (our #1 pick, spoiler alert) because it’s so neutral, but Habiza’s hummus is absolutely bursting with nutty flavor. It’s a little tangy, too, and you can also taste the olive oil—you can really taste every element in here. This is a VERY close second for me.”

There are a few things that make Habiza different from other brands. For one thing, they soak their beans—apparently, a lot of brands don’t do that. They also use white humera tahini, which gives it that unique, nutty flavor. And when they’re blending the hummus, they add ice cubes to the mix so it’ll be nice and fluffy.

It’s good stuff. If you’re sick of Sabra, keep an eye out for Habiza. There really is a difference.

Gwynedd Stuart

Howdy! I’m Gwynedd, Sporked’s managing editor. I live in Los Angeles and have access to the best tacos the U.S. has to offer—but I’m a sucker for a crunchy Old El Paso taco night every now and then. I’ve been at Sporked since 2022 and I’m still searching frozen mozzarella sticks that can hold a candle to restaurant sticks. Why you should trust me: I’ve been a journalist for 20 years (yikes), a consumer of food for 40-plus years, and I’m truly hard pressed to think of foods I don’t like (or that I can’t tolerate at the very least). Oh and one time I cooked my way through Guy Fieri’s cookbook and wrote about the journey through Flavortown. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s Original Savory Thins. Fat free plain yogurt (usually Fage or Nancy’s). Honeycrisp apples. Sweet cream coffee creamer for my at-home Americanos. A frozen cauliflower crust pizza and some jarred mushrooms to top it with. Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells and Gardein Ground Be’f, even though I think “be’f” is a nightmarish contraction. Favorite ranking: Stouffer’s frozen dinners. I don’t own a microwave (I get my cancers the old fashioned way!), so I love taste testing things that I don’t really buy to eat at home. Least favorite ranking: Soy sauce. Don’t get me wrong, I love soy sauce—but consuming that much sodium in one sitting is probably illegal in some countries. Our frozen enchilada taste test was a close second; the smell of microwaved corn tortillas still haunts me.
