7 Pretzels with Outstanding Flavor and Crunch

Pretzels are always an underrated snack. They don’t really get the same amount of love as chips, but there’s a pleasant elegance to a pretzel’s simplicity. Done right, a pretzel is crunchy, salty, and just a little tangy. It needs to be crystalized with salt. Pretzels shine brightest with a beverage. Whether it be a beer (hell yeah) or a soda, they make the perfect accompaniment to a nice cold one. That said, a good pretzel also shouldn’t need a beverage. A good pretzel should never, ever dry your mouth out. It should stand alone. And it should be flavorful, toasted, and forgettable in a good way. None of us should be thinking too hard about our pretzels.

Well, we do think too hard about pretzels here at Sporked. It’s our damn job. We passed around bag after bag of pretzels and jotted down intensive tasting notes like we get paid to do this (we do) looking for pretzels with understated flavor, structure, and razzle-dazzle. So, here are the seven best pretzels you can buy.

Snyder’s of Hanover Snaps

Best of the Best

Snyder’s of Hanover Snaps

Snyder’s is the gold standard for pretzels, period. Each bite of a Snyder’s pretzel is the perfect little morsel of salty, crunchy goodness. There’s something indescribably buttery about a Snyder’s pretzel, too, like they’ve been brushed with fat. And there are different styles for every type of pretzel snacker. The best of the Snyder’s bunch, though? That would be the pretzel snaps. These pretzel grids are properly salted, crunchy but not dry, and easy to eat. A bag of pretzels that you don’t get sick of in two minutes? That’s an incredible feat. Good on you, Snyder’s. These pretzels also stray from the traditional looped shape, and the tightly knitted grid of a snap is great for dipping. Also, it should be said that Snyder’s of Hanover is based in Pennsylvania. Trust the state of Pennsylvania to deliver on chips and pretzels always. (Editor’s note: Danny is a Pennsylvania native and therefore biased. But also usually correct about these things.)

Snyder’s of Hanover Honey Mustard & Onion Pretzel Pieces

Best Flavor

Snyder’s of Hanover Honey Mustard & Onion Pretzel Pieces

These are insanely good. Like, a pretzel has no right to be this deep with flavor. To be fair, these are pretzel pieces, which kind of read more like a crouton and less like a traditional pretzel snack. But, all things considered, this is still a pretzel. These pretzel pieces are concentrated with incredibly sweet honey mustard flavor. The fat content is way higher than anything else on this list, too. Snyder’s pretzel pieces have 15% saturated fat compared to the 0% saturated fat of their Snaps, but that’s all well and good with us. Go big on flavor. Go Snyder’s Honey Mustard & Onion Pretzel Pieces.

Pro Tip: Sporked staff writer Jordan Myrick suggested putting these on a salad like a crouton. I did it twice, and it’s incredible. A gift from us to you. Put these on a salad.

Snack Factory Pretzel Crisps

Best Thin Pretzel

Snack Factory Pretzel Crisps

Snack Factory figured out something about pretzels nobody else has: A pretzel is best when there’s less of it. That’s right, sometimes a snack pretzel is just too big and clunky, and thus dry. That is not the case with pretzel crisps. You get all the great salty, toasty, tangy flavor of a pretzel but in cracker form. Super light yet still crunchy, these pretzel crisps are a natural pairing for hummus, or really any dip at all. This is a solid entry into the wide world of pretzels, and a pretty unique twist on a classic snack.

Snyder’s of Hanover Hot Buffalo Wing Pretzel Pieces

Best Spicy Pretzel

Snyder’s of Hanover Hot Buffalo Wing Pretzel Pieces

Surprise, surprise. Snyder’s is here yet again. These are the same pretzel pieces as before, but with a hot Buffalo sauce flavor. The Buffalo flavor here isn’t very overwhelming, and there’s still that wonderfully fatty, saturated flavor of a Snyder’s pretzel piece that defies all logic. The flavor of the honey mustard and onion is more pronounced, but the hot Buffalo wing deserves a place on this list because it is no easy feat to make a good spicy pretzel. A lot of companies just kind of dust their pretzels with seasoning and it falls off. Not Snyder’s. Their flavor is baked into each tasty morsel.

Perfection Snacks Mustard & Onion Pretzel Twists

Best Gluten-Free

Perfection Snacks Mustard & Onion Pretzel Twists

Gluten-free pretzels just work well. Without the gluten, pretzels become so much less dense. For a perfect example, Perfection Snacks makes a nicely toasted, light, and well seasoned gluten-free pretzel you can count on. Unlike Snyder’s sweet honey mustard and honey, the version from Perfection Snacks has a much more pronounced onion flavor. So if onions are your thing, head in this direction. They also have a wonderful crunch, which combined with the light texture makes them super crushable.

Utz Sourdough Specials

Best Beer Pretzel

Utz Sourdough Specials

Utz, another Pennsylvania company, makes great chips and pretzels. Their sourdough specials are big in size, but the texture is still light, airy, and crunchy. These pretzels might be the most pleasant to munch. They’re well salted, too. While their size might seem a little foreboding, in the end they didn’t make any of our mouths dry. Large, salty, crumbly, and flavorful, Utz Specials are the perfect pretzel to serve with a cold beer.

Snyder’s of Hanover Mini Pretzels

Best Game Day Pretzel

Snyder’s of Hanover Mini Pretzels

If you’re looking for a classic pretzel, look no further than Snyder’s minis. All of Snyder’s pretzels have that same buttery, salty, lightly toasted feel to them. They’re never dry and always enjoyable. Compared to the snaps and pieces, the minis deliver that classic pretzel shape, which makes them good for munching, but less versatile in the dipping category. Still fill up a big bowl with a bag of Snyder’s minis and watch them disappear.

  • The best spice pretzel is Snyder’s Jalapeno flavor. I think if you try them you’ll think the same. I honestly think it wins in at least 3 of these categories lol.

    • Are these the Snyder’s Twists? I found that those don’t carry flavor the same way as the Pretzel Pieces (which we love).

      • No, not the Twists. It’s the Snyder’s Jalapeno Pieces. They’re always sold out over here I have to buy them on Amazon unfortunately. The twist has an overpowered butter flavor in my opinion. I’m not a fan.

  • You got to have a do-over and add Dots Pretzels. Hands down the best.

    • AGREED,
I just stumbled across them. The mustard is fantastic, The consistency is ideal, theyre dense and bready, they basically turn back into bread in your mouth along with crunch. They’re very hard to find in stores and I dont seem them online. So may be hard to test. But I’ve had almost everything on this list and Dots beats them out. They wont change your life but they will change your Pretzel preference.

  • Its a crime that Dots aren’t on this list. Those are hands down the BEST pretzels on this planet.

  • Pretzel rods, sour dough thicc bois, and rold gold honey twists are my go to. Also, did anyone else ever make mini cabins out of pretzel sticks and then pretend they were some sort of kaiju and destroy the little domicile or was it just me?

  • Ever try Uncle Jerry’s pretzels? Yep, they’re from Pennsylvania. You can buy them at Whole Food though.

  • I have celiac so I HAVE TO be GF. Usually I get a lack of flavor and second up to what the OG food is. But when it comes to pretzels I actually get the best. I have all my friends, fam, and 100% sold my co-workers on glutino’s pretzels, Snyders’ GF pretzels are better than their OG ones as well. Give them a try! You won’t regret it! 😊
