Subway Will Give You Free Sandwiches for a Year if You Find a Lyrid Meteorite

Sometimes, a food giveaway comes along that makes us, for want of a better word, lol. The fast food world is no stranger to the kind of competition that requires you to find a specific item to win money or free grub, but most of the time, those items come in return for you buying burgers, fries, and kids’ meals, and hoping that said item is included with them. Subway’s taking a different approach this month, though. It’s offering one customer a year of free sandwiches if they find a meteorite.

Subway x The Lyrid Meteor Shower: A Collab No One Saw Coming

According to Subway’s official website for this giveaway, ifoundameatier.com (another chuckle from me as I typed that one out), a year of free Subway will be bestowed upon one lucky customer, who manages to find a meteorite from the Lyrid Meteor Shower. According to Subway, you have to be the first person to find one of these confirmed meteorites from said shower, upload an image of it, and “verify the space rock with a scientific institution.” If all of those conditions are met, you’ll get free sandwiches until the next Lyrid Meteor Shower, in April 2027.

Subway goes into a little more detail about how to actually verify the meteorite you’ve found in its official rules. It’s not as simple as bringing it to one of its locations in your hand and showing it to the sandwich artist, we’re afraid. You first have to note the date, time, and location where you’ve found the suspected meteorite, and make sure that you handle it carefully. Then, during its Validation Phase, “you must contact a qualified scientific institution with experience in studying and validating meteorites for their review of your Meteorite.” Subway notes that you should never pay for validation; this should be obtained through a university or an independent testing facility.

It’s ongoing. This year, the meteor shower is running from April 14 to April 30, and its peak was a couple of nights ago. It’s best viewed from the Northern hemisphere, so you might have already seen a couple of them!

This is the tough part – given that the streaks that are created by meteor showers are actually signs of disintegration, the ones you see may not actually be landing anywhere. When meteorites do land on Earth, their location is seemingly pretty random, and many of them end up in desert areas or in the ocean.

So…this may just be some canny marketing by Subway, and no one may actually end up with a free supply of sandwiches. But hey – it’s made us think about space, and that’s always fun, right? And it’s a bit more exciting than its current BOGO deal, so there’s always that.
