Sometimes, we find out things about people’s buying habits that we really weren’t expecting. Mostly, data about which foods people go for, from popular frozen pizzas to olive oil brands, doesn’t throw up too many curveballs – you can kinda sense in the air what the most widespread products are in specific categories. Go retailer by retailer, though, and things start to get a little bit stranger.

For evidence of this, we present the recent data provided by Accio from Alibaba, which has revealed the top-selling food and drink items on Amazon, as of mid-April. It’s a bit left-field.
What Are People Buying?
Well, the top-selling product by far on Amazon is an energy drink – in fact, the first and the second best-selling items are energy drinks, but the top one is waaaay more popular than we thought. More people are buying C4 Energy’s Black Cherry Zero Sugar energy drink than anything else, a flavor that didn’t even make our best-of ranking for the brand. Apparently, in the last month, almost 120,000 cases of this energy drink were bought on Amazon. 120,000!
That’s even weirder when you consider that the next best-selling item, Cellucor C4 Ultimate Non-Carbonated Zero Sugar Energy Drink, only sold 1,702 units. Essentially, C4’s Black Cherry drink is, apparently, more than 70 times more popular than the Cellulor drink. It’s all very perplexing, guys.
Okay… What Came Next?
After those two drinks, there were a bunch of snacks. The third best-selling item, and best-selling food overall, was Jalapeño Ranch Ruffles, of which 1,112 bags sold in a month period. Again, these Ruffles didn’t place in our flavor ranking for the chips – did we miss something there? After that, it was Goya Foods Plantain Chips, which sold 259 units of its 12-pack boxes, and then a couple of varieties of vegetable chips and Ritz Toasted Chips flavors. Mixed in amongst these were two kinds of food storage bags.
Weird. What Does This Say About the World?
Well, we can tell you what it says about people, we guess. These items indicate, as Accio states, “a desire for convenience.” All of the best-selling items were prepared snacks and drinks, and many of them had a health or wellness-focused bent, with energy drinks designed to fuel workouts and vegetable chips that serve as an alternative to regular chips doing very well. It also noted that plant-based foods have seen a 25% increase in sales.
More broadly, it also noted that more and more people are buying their food online, as retail itself attempts to shift towards ever-more convenient models for customers. It finished off its report by recommending that businesses focus on selling items like snack bars, frozen meals, and plant-based meat alternatives to capture customers. And cherry-flavored energy drinks, maybe?
