When you’re used to shopping at other supermarkets, the worst part of the Aldi experience is adjusting to its rather bare-bones stores. Well, that and having to carry all your groceries in your shirt when you forget a quarter for a cart. Most of us are willing to adjust because we know it’s what helps Aldi keep prices so dang low prices. Times are a-changin’ though, so Aldi’s looking to give their stores a little glow-up to help them connect with modern consumers.

Gone is the strictly utilitarian mindset…

Since last September, Aldi has been testing a totally new store format at their location in Aventura, Florida. According to Allrecipes, the “new format marks a shift from the utilitarian feel of older stores toward a modular, adaptable design.”

Instead of a purely function-over-form mindset, Aldi is aiming to make their stores more inviting. This includes dedicating more space to fresh produce, healthy options, and grab-and-go meals for busy shoppers who still want something health-conscious. They’ll also be revamping their signage, product design, and employee uniforms for a more boutique-y feel.

Don’t worry, Aldi’s still dedicated to keeping prices down

Though these changes might make your wallet shudder, Aldi promises their prices are going to stay down. To help keep costs in check, they’re using this shift to implement a modular mindset to their store designs. Basically, the idea is to streamline everything to be as similar as possible between stores so it’s easier to get into new neighborhoods and keep startup costs as low as possible. That way, they don’t have to raise your total at checkout to cover those front-loaded costs.

It’s not clear when the changes will be taking place, but keep an eye out for updates at your local Aldi and let us know what you see.
