King’s Hawaiian and Van Leeuwen collab on an ice cream sandwich
The purveyor of your favorite rolls for mini ham sandwiches and the maker of your favorite Earl Grey ice cream have joined forces to create a limited-time-only ice cream sandwich. It’s Van Leeuwen Ube Coconut Ice Cream on a King’s Hawaiian ube coconut roll. It’s super purple. And it sounds sooo good.
What is ube?
You’ve been seeing it everywhere, but aren’t sure what ube is and have been afraid to ask and too lazy to google. We’ve got you. Ube is a purple yam that indigenous to the Philippines. It’s known for not just its violet hue, but also a unique flavor that’s likened to vanilla or coconut.
When and where can you find these Van Leeuwen x King’s Hawaiian ice cream sandwiches?
The treats launched today (April 29) and are available while supplies last at select Van Leeuwen scoop shops in New York, Los Angeles, and Boston.
Is this collab really just a limited time offering?
Yes, sadly, at the moment, these literal ice cream sandwiches will only be enjoyed by a lucky few. And, since Van Leeuwen doesn’t currently sell ube ice cream in pints (do it!!), you also can’t make your own at home. You can, however, use a different ice cream in a DIY version. Grab a bag of the new ube King’s Hawaiian rolls and experiment. I’d start with the Van Leeuwen Matcha (a divisive flavor, for sure, but a now classic pairing with ube). But their Sicilian Pistachio ice cream would also totally rule. Or the Honeycomb? Maybe just buy every pint on our ranking of the best Van Leeuwen flavors, just to be safe.
