National Clam Chowder Day has been and gone this year (it was back on February 25, in case you were wondering), and back then, you might have noticed a conspicuous absence of one canned chowder soup on your shelves. We’re talking, of course, about Campbell’s Condensed New England Clam Chowder. This flavor used to be a firm favorite amongst its customers, for its ability to deliver concentrated chowder flavor with no fuss.

Now, however, it’s gone – for good. And the worst part? They left it for us to figure all of that out. Here’s what went down.

Say Goodbye to Condensed Clam Chowder

Campbell’s Condensed New England Clam Chowder was just one of its many condensed soups, which the company started selling in the late ‘80s. It should be said that it’s not the only clam chowder that Campbell’s sold, or sells – it still has a couple of options in its product line-up, some of which fared very well in our clam chowder soup taste test. It was the condensed version, though, that people came back to again and again.

Until they couldn’t. In a statement to Mashed, A Campbell’s spokesperson confirmed that the Condensed New England Clam Chowder had been discontinued in 2025, saying that the company “found that consumers preferred this variety in a ready-to-serve format.” Well, that doesn’t seem to be the case across the board, if Reddit is anything to go by. Customers who used to buy its condensed version weren’t happy, with some people saying that the ready-to-serve versions just don’t have as much flavor. We guess that you win some, you lose some.

What Is Campbell’s Doing Next?

From our perspective, it should be said that Campbell’s Condensed New England Clam Chowder didn’t make either the above-mentioned list of our favorite clam chowders, nor did it make the list of the best Campbell’s cream of soups – but a loss from a product line is a loss from a product line. For its own part, though, Campbell’s seems to be looking forward to new options and seems willing to scrap its older offerings that are just no longer working. Last month, it announced that it was launching a line of canned sauces with an emphasis on global flavors, picking up on the tendency for home cooks to use cans of its soup in their meals and guiding them in a new direction.

As for the clam chowder, though, it doesn’t look like it’s coming back any time soon. Pour one out next February 25 for its loss, while you toil over your pot of homemade chowder, knowing full well that it could have been so much easier.
