Detroit style pizza is all about decadence. The center of the crust should be the fluffiest substance known to man. The edges should climb high with cheese that collected around the edges of the pan. And the rest of the cheese? Well, there should be lots of it and it should be gooey as heck.
The beauty of a frozen Detroit style pizza is that it brings this magic to your home. There are already some pretty good ones at the grocery store, so Trader Joe’s new Detroit style pepperoni pizza showed up to the party late with some stiff competish already in place. But all the same, I couldn’t resist. I went down to my local TJ’s and picked up the new Detroit style pizza to try it for myself.

Pros: Trader Joe’s Detroit style pizza has a delightful flavor. There’s a garlicky essence to the crust that’s present in every bite. The cheese that managed to make it to the edge and crisp up was wonderfully rich. In comes in a pan you pop directly into the oven and, while that’s pretty standard for frozen Detroit style pizzas, it’s still a nice touch. It helped the crust really develop a lovely golden color.
Cons: The pomp and circumstance just isn’t here. It’s like everything was delivered at 70% perfection. The crust, while it tastes great, is a bit too chewy. The sauce lacks depth and is spread way too thin for a Detroit style pizza. Then comes the cheese, which also seems to have been rationed at the factory. Trader Joe’s left out the soul of what a Detroit style pizza should be.
